Exhaust Valve / Tuning

Hey guys, im new to the forum and i was wondering.

It is legal and possible to create a Exhaust valve so i could by the flip of a switch change the sound of the exhaust by creating an opening. If you get what im saying, i cant really explain to too well.

And i recently put a Borla Exhaust on my Rx8 and i was wondering if i would need to retune the turbo that was already on it prior?

Be sure to also wire some electronic ear plugs to keep your ears from bleeding and also a cloaking device to help avoid every cop within 15 miles who will know your exact location

An uncorked rotary is a beautiful thing to hear. From a distance. With ear plugs. Rotaries are inherently raspy at full throttle and partial throttle. The kind of raspy that makes your brain bleed as if it was being sandblasted. As one owner put it: "It's like attacking a tin shed with a chain saw, from inside the shed." Rotaries also have a much different pitch of exhaust note than piston engines. It's higher, more piercing. Rotaries are also much much louder. This is a side effect of how much energy (heat) we have getting dumped into our exhaust. The 787B 4 rotor being tested and measured for inclusion into Forza 4 was described as being "the loudest thing ever heard" by the sound guys. So loud that they had to use special equipment buffered and layered multiple times to try to dampen down the volume to prevent severe distortion. A 2-rotor isn't quite that loud, but it's certainly loud enough to cause physical pain. Perhaps you don't care, but the local cops, friends, family, and other enthusiasts will NOT share your opinion and cause you much trouble.

Also, think VERY VERY carefully about whether or not you actually want this occurring under your car, rather than behind it

I missed the comment about the turbo.

If you actually have a turbo installed and don't know everything about it, you are in over your head, even if you aren't aware of that yet.

I know very well about the turbo, just not technical stuff like this. I was wondering since i bought a Cat-Back Borla, would i need to retune it because of backpressure?

And as for the valve, i was wondering if i could buy/make a valve so i could open it and close it by a switch.

While I question the wisdom in doing this, I will. Google "electric exhaust cutout".

You say this...

But then you follow it with this and prove that no, you actually don't know "very well about the turbo".

You wouldn't be asking that question if you actually did know all about it. And I don't mean "if you knew the answer then you wouldn't ask", I mean "if you know about that magic word 'backpressure' you wouldn't ask a question about how the catback effects it".

It's like asking how to calculate the angle of the sun to get the time of day...at night. Sure there is an answer, but knowing that the sun isn't up would eliminate the need to ask the question.

Technical answer, yes, there are such valves and switches.

Again, are you SURE you want that much open flame under your passenger seat? You know, next to the fuel lines?

Do you really know anything about your questions?

There's some threads about the melting, ear raping, cop attracting, highway illegal in most states and on top of that a... flame hazard...

Whatever... What you are looking for is a "Exhaust cut-out" and if you knew enough... You'll know it WILL leak because of exhaust temps of our engines. Now... Ask me how I know...

Search first please, is a way to get 'educated' with other people experiences.

Just saying, don't take it personal...

Can you legally install an actuated exhaust cutout? Yes and no. Obviously it's physically possible and has been done many times. If you need to pass emissions then it has to be after the cat. Many states have rules about where the exhaust exits. Here in Texas it can't just dump under the car and needs to exit outside of the passenger compartment. This means that you'd have to run a side pipe or some other pipe to get it towards the outer edges of the car. Some states have noise restrictions on how loud an exhaust can be. A side port rotary with a turbo is certainly a much quieter animal than a peripheral exhaust port naturally aspirated rotary but it may or may not be too loud for your area. If you plan to just close it for inspection and not worry about the other legality issues then there really is no point in asking if it can be done in the first place.

You're welcome ...

I'd run a resonator through the cutout at the very least
