I am very interested in getting the BHR midpipe. I have been doing a lot of research on it and would like to get the one with the Catalyst add on because I'd really like it to pass inspection.

My question is will this through a CEL when I install it? I am new to modding and don't want to have any CEL after a mod.

What are the pros and cons to having the BHR midpipe with and without the catalyst.

I don't know about the catalyst one, but I have the BHR midpipe.
Pros; Excellent fit and durability.
Sounds good with no rasp or drone.
Slight improvement in HP & MPG.
Most importantly, peace of mind knowing a clogged cat won't kill my engine.

I had the BHR midpipe with the catalyst. No CEL until the cat had about 16K on it. It reeked from the get-go although inside the car you couldn't smell it. Considering $130 (the price of the Davesport cat in the BHR midpipe) is like the cheapest cat you can get, I feel like 16K out of it isn't awful. The stock cat on a series 2 runs $3k, my stock cat lasted 71K miles.

After the davesport cat failed we welded a nice HJS cat into the BHR midpipe. HJS is still less than stock but way more than the Davesport cat in the BHR. I feel like performance is comparable to the Davesport, but smell and noise is WAY less, pretty much like stock. I think the HJS I have would even pass a California sniffer test, the old Davesport only passed my last smog because that mechanic had a giant soft spot for rotaries. I can't imagine the Davesport cat would pass emissions inspection anywhere, although it is fairly quiet and doesn't sound modified unless you know what a stock RX-8 sounds like.

Sorry for the late reply here but ive been looking into getting a BHR midpipe as well, i currently have the Borla Catback.

If i get the midpipe without the Cat, it WILL throw a CEL and wont pass a simple OBD emissions test? Also does the midpipe make it siginificantly louder? I currently sit around 80-85 DBA at 50' and my local track has a limit of 92. i heard that it doesnt make it much louder, just a different note, and removes the drone at freeway speeds, just looking for a confirmation from an owner.

Awesome thanks for the reply! The coils are relatively new within 3k miles, more just looking for an upgrade, and with it being a daily, the highway drone can get a little annoying sometimes, especially if i have someone else in the car im trying to talk to.

So if i do get the BHR midpipe w/o cat, i would have to switch it to the OEM cat to pass emissions? it is just a basic OBD hook up, no testing exhaust or anything. Just wanting to make sure what im getting into before buying.

You will likely get stored codes for cat delete.
If you clear them before you get the OBD scanned, there may be a 'not ready' state that might be considered cause for rejection.
It can be masked with an Access Port device.
I get a 2 year inspection here in Missouri. 2 so far.

I had a bad cat and replaced it with the BHR, and bought a cheap Walker cat for less than $200 just for emissions testing.
The first time they checked the OBD and passed, the second time a different place did a basic check and didn't even put it on a lift.

Even if you had to reinstall the cat once a year, to me it's worth the trouble for the peace of mind the midpipe provides.
It's not very hard to swap out.

Just drive your car a bit after you swap to OEM and clear codes. Also, most states are now rejecting cars who are using blocked codes or who "fake" numbers - so be aware.
