Any updates on autocross, lightweight exhaust?

I did what I think is a pretty thorough search on this forum for information regarding dumping the factory cat back section of the exhaust and doing a lighter, single outlet replacement.

It appears that a few folks have gone this route, but I've been unable to find any dyno data or other way of determining whether any power was lost or gained?

Also, it would be great to know which systems are db friendly...

Thanks for any help with this!

Mike

What class are you shooting for? An aftermarket exhaust will automatically kick you out of stock class in SCCA.

Regarding power: Oh no! Here come the 'search' Nazis!

I'm just looking at the cat back, to stay legal in BS.

I did searched under a number of different words and couldn't find anything that really answered the power question in relation to lightweight cat back. The only thing close was fastmike's experience with a straight pipe and then a muffled straight pipe, which he felt needed to be updated...and, now that he's in the Solstice, I kind of doubt he's going to get around to it...

best dB friendly for the weight is not wallet friendly.

The JIC Ti exhaust only weighs 17 lb and is just barely louder than OE

otherwise, no (eardrum) pain, no (weight-loss) gain

Yeah, about the only singles I have seen were a prototype HKS unit and it gave a good +10hp/10 ft.-lbs. of tq (on a turboed RX8), and Nemesis had the single exhaust from RB. Both (and I would probably surmise all singles)are substantially louder than the stock unit.

I have the JIC unit, and it is very, very lightweight compared to the stock unit.

you may want to consider the second version MS exhaust. It is a dual setup, but the cans are very small and the weight savings is very good over stock. As for power, I doubt you'll find any exhaust that will produce any significant numbers. The issue that will be most important to you is going to be weight savings in this situation. Ulllose has a custom single exhaust....I think it is just a single Borla muffler with 3 inch piping. Team RX8 also has a custom single exhaust. Ghost, in the San Bernardino thread just did some custom piping for a 3 inch exhaust with a single pipe exitting the middle of the rear bumper....

....I would go with the MS or with a setup similar to Ulllose. I wouldn't waste your money on JIC or the single muffler RB.

Has anyone ever figured out whether they are giving up any power with the single exit, Borla (or similar) 12" muffler? I would kind of doubt it really impacts power one way or the other, but would be curious to know if anyone's dyno'ed and shared results...

I would also think it would be cheaper to fab a 3" single system than buy a MS system, but I can't figure out the pricing on MS stuff...actually, I can't even figure out how to determine what's available, I go to the Mazda site and it asks for me to register and give my SS#, just to see the catalog?

Are you in the Mazdaspeed Development Program? If so, just call them and they can find the part number and give you the program price. I find that it is a little cheaper than what Rosenthal Mazda offers products at.

If not, check the website for the rules of how to become a member. It has been well worth it to me.

As for custom 3" system, I would agree that it would be cheaper to get one done custom. You'll save a lot on money and weight going that route. Performance....I would suggest reading through Team RX8's thread to get some info in that area....he has a thread devoted to the build up of his "STU" RX8.

Which path, the exhaust or giving up your SS # to join the Mazdaspeed deal?

If I want the dyno results for your exhaust, what should I search for? "omnipotent" or just "supreme"?

It is my understanding from what I have read, it that Mazda did a pretty good job on the 8's muffler and there realy isn't any big gains to be had from an exhaust change. (I am talking catback.) A weight saving is always nice. As is a nicer exhaust tone.
