Alright I wont give to much of a back story to me finding out about this product but the short version is like this....

My headlights after several days of 100degree weather for some reason started to look like they where stoned. They had a odd technicolor to them. Dealer kept me strung along for over a week about them. Then finaly they tell me they can fix them but its out of warrenty and will take a few days since its a "long involved process". I said "I'll think about it." which translated to "ha.. um no thanks!". I think to myself there has to be another way this color is in deep to the point I believed it was on the inside of the headlights. So I set out to find something to prove them wrong and possibly cure my headlights.

I went to Advanced Auto Parts and found this lil lone bottle of Maguiar's PlastX. I read the label and back instructions and figured I'd give it a go. This stuff works by cleaning up the oxidization and haze of weather and natural wear. I was skeptical at first but after the first use there was a dramatic difference. The technicolor stoned color was gone and the other part of my headlights looked brand new. I waited several hours to see if it was just initial cleaning like some products I've used in the past they look great but a hour later you realize they suck. Well to my surprise the technicolor film or whateva it was stayed gone. I applied another helping to my headlights to make sure and to miss a few small small spec's and yeah I love this stuff now. It only cost $7.50 and you dont use that much (thank you small headlights) to get the job done.

I hope if anyone has a headlight problem they try this product out (wish I did sooner).

I shall get some tomorrow. I have a few pictures of before from my headlight technicolor issue. I'm afraid to ask how much that um "Service" would of cost me. My headlights do have several small knicks but I expect that but that technicolor crap was getting worse. Hoping to go out tonight to see the difference in the lighting.

This is pretty ironic. I also had the 'technicolor' haze on my headlights and I was about to take it into the dealer. I went to Advance Auto and lo and behold there was 1 bottle of PlastX on the shelf. I heard some good things about it, so I bought it. This stuff did remove the haze from the my headlights, although it seemed difficult to buff off. Did you have that trouble? It may have been the oils on the headlight that were so tough to remove. No big deal though... it did the job well. I'd tried other plastic cleaners and never got the haze to come off... so I also give Maguiar's PlastX thumbs up!

Both pictures where taken on different days obviously but at the same time of day and both days were clear out. It obviously didnt take car of those knicks since its not sand paper but it cleaned up the headlights very nicely.

Welcome Easy.
I know alot of people have issues with their headlights with film on the inside but for those on the outside this seems to work wonders.

I'm glad I found this thread, it has saved me a tidy sum on replacement headlights as even used headlights for my Eclipse are still pricey.

Let me start off by saying that in the before photos the headlights are clean. There is no dirt, what you see is the actual oxidation. The after photos are after having haphazardly applied the Meguirs. I'm sure if I put some elbow grease into cleaning the headlights the results will be better. Notice how in the photos with the headlights on you can't even see the reflector because of the oxidation and in the after it is clear. There are some marks still left on the cleaned headlight but I want to let everyone know that it's not the products failing. Those are rock chips from 6 years of SoCal highway driving.

Hey Ineed,

You definatly took better photo's than I did to show the before after effects of this stuff. With elbow grease if you will, you just feel like your ruining your headlights but it just helps work the stuff in. Glad I could help ya out with this thread

I wanted to show that this stuff works. I went back out and buffed the headlights a bit more and did see more improvement but not much more. These headlights have had a rough life and I think I've helped them as much as I am going to be able to. The great thing is that I drove the car a little while ago and hadn't realized how much the illumination had fallen off over time. I saw a noticeable increase in usable road illumination. This car is my daily driver so the extra bit of illumination helps.

that looks ok. but have you tried wet sanding them? on my old escort headlights they would always get very yellowish. If you sand them down with a 600, then 1200, then 2000, then clearcoat them they look brand new, and it gets rid of the rock chips as well.... wouldn't do this to the 8 cause they're still "new" headlights, but you might try it on that eclipse, just make sure the clear-coat you use is non yellowing, and sun/oxidation resistant.

Wet sanding is a good last resort, (I used to do it too), but believe me, PlastX works better. I also used it on my wife's Talon twice a year after the initial cleaning and no more yellowing (oxidation & baked on waxes). Also removed the "fogginess" from plastic fog lamp lenses.

Whoa, nice find! My brother has an eclipse as well and I can't even see into the damn headlights anymore....

I'll have to send him a bottle of this stuff.

Clavius let me use some of his Maguiars PlastX at a recent car show and it worked to clean my technicolor haze off my headlights too. I need to get myself a bottle to clean up my Miata headlights. This product gets a thumbs up!

Yar I thought.. **** was set deep in there. Had to use it twice myself and used alot of elbow grease. Though now my tail lights have turned into a bathtub getting them replaced tomorrow though. I just wish at first they told me about this kind of product or hinted about it saving me some aggrivation and the creation of the infamous "Headlight Restoration Kit".

clavius i'm glad you posted this, i have a 2000 mustang and the plastic for the headlights is horrible. I shall give it a try this saturday.

SOmetimes plastx might not work alone on badly oxidized headlight lenses like the mustangs (the plastic they use = total crap). you might need to do some 2000 grit sanding before using plastx... and make sure you put some sort of protection afterwards (like sealants/wax) to prevent future oxidation.

I have been using this stuff for a couple of years and here are today Rx7 flash to pass lenses. Also check out the turn signal lense. It's only been half done as an example.
