how do i go about removing this salt build up?

What about using a carpet steamer? They come with upholstery attachments that work great for the seats (if cloth!) and carpeted floors in a car... I used mine for coffee stains in my old car (thank goodness nothing yet in the 8..!)

I really shoulda taken before and after pics, and I did read this thread prior to cleaning my carpets, but alas, I did not, so you will have to traust my word for it
But, the salt came out of my carpets with ease with:
A bucket of hot water,
Mild dish soap,
A plastic hard-bristled brush,
Light to medium scrubbing.
That did it
The salt use here in Toronto is just as liberal as up there in Ottawa, and my carpets looked eerily similar to your pics above.
Came out great IMO!
