Today around 6pm (pacific time) there will be a solar eclipse viewable in much of the world... I'm hoping to snag a pic or two with my RX-8 in the frame (if the Oregon clouds allow it.)
A rare opportunity to get some really cool pics!

Your location on the planet has everything to do if and when the eclipse occurs for your location.
The fact that you even know there is an eclipse today likely means you understand this but others will not.
Just because the eclipse starts a 6pm at your buddies place the next timezone over from you doesn't mean it starts at 5pm or 7pm (whatever way you go) for you.
So here is a list of start and finish times and a link to a UTC clock with major city times.
Was going to ask the same thing... Pretty sure they are... a solar eclipse at midnight EST is pretty much a non event.... back it up 5 hours and we're talking sunset...
If I could find a nice flat with good view of the western horizon this has the potential for an amazing picture.
Oh ****! my 8 is in the shop !@@#@!#$!$! Curse you upgrades !!!

I was thinking HDR ... the under/over exposure should make for a very interesting HDR image.

I work nights, so I'll have to get up early to see this event... So, I figure I'm just going to go some open parking lot very close to home.
But you're right, it doesn't look like the weather is going to cooperate here.
I used to work graveyard. I know some people love it but I could never adjust. Where are you in Portland? I work near downtown (NW 21st) but live in Beaverton.
Boo, I don't have a fancy-pants camera and I just sold my 64GB iPhone 4S.
doesn't have to be that fancy of a camera (although they certainly make it easier). if your point and shoot lets you adjust the auto exposure and you have a tripod you can fairly easily get the necessary perquisite shots for HDR conversion.
The newer HDR stitching software out there will even do auto trimming for you so if one image is a smidge off from the next it'll auto align them for you post processing.

I live in Rock Creek, work at Intel in Hillsboro. Up until 2010, I worked days. But when they announced they were going to close the fab I was working at, and the prospect was that not everyone would find a job within the company, I took the first job offer to remain employed. Turns out that nobody was let go, and had I waited, I could've found another day shift position. But that wasn't what anyone predicted at the time.
I get a really good shift pay differential (+16%) for working nights, and it is definitely quieter... But those things still don't offset the life imbalance, and I will switch back to days the very moment an opportunity arises.
Remember to grab your #14 welders glass to view the eclipse.
You can use it again to see Venus transit the Sun on June 5 an event that won't happen again this century.
