Great Pics!!!

Please tell me that you took the picture of the oil filter from the bottom of the car! If the oil filter sits upside down, changing the oil is going to make a real mess!

The oil filter on my 1981 RX7 was on top. To minimize the mess you drain the oil from the oil pan. While it is draining, you take a hammer and a screwdriver and bang a hole in the top of the oil filter so that air can get in. As the air goes in the oil drains out back into the oil pan then out into your tray.

Let it drain for a few minutes. There will still be a little oil left in side so you need to remove the filter slowly. Just have some rags handy. There will be some spilled on the side of the engine.

Yes the filter was top. near the firewall. It was a tight fit. I was angled forward to allow for better access.

I pull the filter in the morning after good night of draining. No need for rags or holes in the filter.

Thanks for the info on the oil filter guys, hopefully the overnight method will work fine with the RENESIS as well. I'm just thinking that with the typical anti-drainback valves on most if not all filters these days, there is bound to be some oil left in the filter to make a bit of a mess, but I'll take your word for it Superfan.
