Return of the ROTARY

Mazda Motor Corporation just stated on their facebook page that they are working hard to bring the next generation rotary engine car:

Thank you for all your encouraging comments about the RX-8 and the rotary engine. They are highly appreciated.
Although we cannot announce any specifics, we can assure you that Mazda is working hard on a number of technological breakthroughs in the development of a next-generation rotary engine car. At the same time, Mazda’s spirit of challenge is also driving the advancement of our breakthrough SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY. Your fantastic support will keep us moving forward!

So fear not, rotary engine fans. I think we may have a brief pause prior to the rotary's re-entrance.

Paul.

As always, only time will tell. But I definitely hope to see another one roll out.

If it is with the 16X, I know I'm gonna want, hard.

Give this morsel of hope, am I completely unreasonable to hope for a display and more information about the 16x at the tokyo motor show this year?

Good news finally!
It will probably take time also from a market perspective though, the sportscar segment is full of cars right now.

Many of us won't believe that Mazda will give up on the rotary engine. As long as it exists I will look to Mazda first when I need a new car.

Just drop the S2 engine into the Miata----PLEASE--and NOW before Toyato gets the FT 86 and Subaru gets the BMZ to the dealerships. Mazda will loose an opportunity if they dont. Many folks will drop Mazda and go elsewhere if they dont. Its harder to get folks back than it is to keep them.
Were the Hell is the Zoom-Zoom Mazda?

I don't know about dropping the s2 in to a mx-5 but they do need to give us some idea what the ND is going to be like, with the SA suite.

The current S2 Renesis in the current NC Miata would be a serious contender.

Miata guys don't want their beloved Miata tarnished by the addition of the rotary?

Easy answer, make the hard top non-removable, stick some different skin and a new badge on it.

2012 Mustang GT = 3,603 with 412hp = 8.74bs per hp
2012 Camero SS is 3,820 with 426hp = 8.96bs per hp
Renesis NC = 2,400lbs with 232hp = 10.34bs per hp
2012 Genesis is 3,389lbs with 306hp = 11.07bs per hp
2012 Evo X is 3,400lbs with 295hp = 11.52bs per hp
S1 RX-8 (base MT) 2950 with 232hp = 12.71lbs per hp

Seems like such a no-brainer to me. We already know it fits the chassis, because the NC was the test chassis for the engine during development, and the several Renesis NC swaps prove it out even further how easy it is. At the factory it would be ridiculously simple.

Easy answer, make the hard top non-removable, stick some different skin and a new badge on it.

2012 Mustang GT = 3,603 with 412hp = 8.74hp per pound
2012 Camero SS is 3,820 with 426hp = 8.96hp per pound
Renesis NC = 2,400lbs with 232hp = 10.34hp per pound
2012 Genesis is 3,389lbs with 306hp = 11.07 hp per pound
2012 Evo X is 3,400lbs with 295hp = 11.52hp per pound.

I'm not sure that would be a good idea actually.

Yes, a NC rotary would be pretty epic but think of it this way. I'm not sure the reputation of the miata, being a fun tossable roadster, would work. That much power would change into a serious sports car.

Then there's this problem. Let's assume that for the last years of it's life the NC came with a renesis engine option. Then in 2013/14 the ND goes on sale with it's SA tech.

Assuming the ND reaches it's target weight of 2200lbs with comparable power to the current ND (167hp US spec) then you'd go from a 10.34 lb/hp to 13.17 lb/hp. I imagine it would get the same harsh criticism as the 8 (specifically that it's "not as good as the FD") Especially if the NC-rx is popular I think a lot of people would become greatly disappointed by the drop in power, even with the great leap in fuel economy.

It might be great for the short term but not for the long term.

Edit:

I think you missed the part that with a different skin, "permanent hardtop" (rotary version not a convertible), and different badging, there is no dilution of the "Miata" brand or name. It would make it a different car.

Disagree?

Then do you call the Mazda3, Mazda5, and CX-7 the same car? They share the same chassis and engine, just have different skins and body types.

How about the Mazda6 and the Ford Fusion? Same chassis, different engines, different skins, different badges. Same car? Hardly.

We would know it's the NC chassis, but that doesn't make it a Miata.

This part makes no sense to me. I can't follow what you are saying

ND weight reduction would improve lbs/hp, not hurt it. And at no point and I suggesting a drop in power?

While Mazda will still develop the rotary in some sense, it will be just a matter of time before they pull all funding for the rotary unless the engineers actually DEVELOP something worthy of sale. I can't see them spending money continually on tech they can't/aren't selling. So, while this may be some sort of life support for the rotary I don't see it as lasting life support.

They truly messed it up on the omp injection in s1, s2 fixed everything but if they use the system in fc in the s1 that would probably be better. for those who dunno, they use 1 center injector plus another one at the intake manifold to mix it with gasoline. So yes that means the gas has some oil with it already and most na fc can go over 200k while the turbo fc have no problem reaching 150k mikes. Mazda just underestimate things badly and it totally messed the rotary reputation up.
