Wow. They really ran out of cars to post the rx8.
Everybody raves about the fact that it looks great and packs a rotary engine; but what about the fact that it guzzles oil and gas plus has the world's first torque-free powerplant?

Looking at the numbers and specs of the RX-8, I can easily see why its over hyped... I mean compare the Renesis to a LS motor and compare power/economy... BUT drive a RX-8 it all seems so clear!

The author of that list wants to sound superior to the rest of the automotive world by saying some cars are over-hyped, when clearly they are just 'different' from the regular trends in the automotive industry. The author was going for shock factor by saying cars like the beetle were over hyped. Some of those cars were ridiculous, but nonetheless, the author was going for a shock factor. I guess it makes more people read his articles while they pass time at work. I like the RX8, but I can certainly see why he says that it is over-hyped. It is a fun car to drive and not too many people have them, and they seem mysterious with their rotary engine. The RX8 is unique, just like most of the other cars on that list. I really don't understand how he can say the Ferrari was overhyped, it's a FERRARI! Seriously, how many of those could have been made? Also, he wrote two sentences about each of the cars and neither of the sentences contained a reason as to why the car was over-hyped, just commentary as to why it wasn't a good car. The Prius one said that they should have just made a small diesel compact, but haven't those compact diesels already been made? The pictures of all the cars were nice though...

For a vehicle that isn't even advertised, it cannot possibly be "overhyped". Most Mazda dealerships believe the rx8 has a v8, and that Mazda hasn't made a rotary since the rx7.
With so many facetious reasons listed for every car, from "ancient suspension" to "lacks dynamics" to "looks ugly", it is impossible for the writer to not be guilty of at least 5 of his own reasons. So stupid.

The RX8 is overhyped because for many years car magazines have had the 8 winning in many sports car comparisons. Problem is they were just reacting to how fun (easy) it was to drive. They weren't really living with it. If they had lived with it from day to day, summer-winter, year after year, they would've had another opinion. You have to look at the price you bought your car for, the years of maintenance, that will give you the true cost of ownership. When looking at the 8 this way, it's not worth it. Never mind the feeling I get when I get behind the wheel and drive her.

World's first torque free powerplant??? If people seriously think a Renesis has no torque, go drive a Civic or any other car with a small engine. Go drive an S2000. Sure a rotary has less torque that a worthless in today's car world V8 but that doesn't mean that it's torque free. It's a small engine with a short stroke. What do people expect? The fact that it's so smooth makes power delivery deceiving.
FWIW: A formula 1 engine has far less torque than many street cars do! Read my sig in regards to torque.

Was the RX-8 ever "hyped" at all?
Most non-enthusiasts either don't know what an RX-8 is or don't know that rotaries engines exist at all. I can't remember ever seeing a TV commercial, magazine ad or anything for this car. Where's the hype?
About the only people I can think of who "over-hype" the car might be the guys who make Forza where the car comes stock with about as much power as a stock 350Z and hits 160+ on the oval no problem.

For over-hyped, how about every V6 mustang ever made that still calls itself a mustang?
It's sad that we live in a world where 40-50million americans see nothing wrong with a driving around an automatic, V6 "mustang" that needs the FORD never fail 50k alternator & water pump replacement bundle. That's not an overhyped car and the rx-8 is?
Or maybe the hummer H3? I-5 with no more clearance than your neighbor's X5, and can't get out of its own way, overhyped maybe?
Geez
