Would you have preferred this RX-8?

Just curious - as great as I think the current model is, I did like the front of this model better and the side mirrors. I wish there was a kit to have this done.

Since you are asking for opinions, I have to say that early concept is butt ugly. There is nothing on the exterior I can say I like,, the side mirrors are okay but I could take them or leave them compared to what is on the 8 now. Maybe that thing looks better in person, much like the 8 is okay in pictures, but absolutely stunning when in person.

i don't have a problem with the front of the final product. it's the back that i find ugly. what does the back of that concept look like?

I would take the hood and the mesh seats. They not only free up a lot more back seat room, they also look wicked cool.

here's the back - I love the current RX-8, but I think I like this car better. One thing I've found I really like on other cars is when the back end leans in toward the front of the car like the last Z, the current G35c. I would have liked to see the RX-8 with that type of rear styling. The current rear is just OK - not bad, not great, not very inspired. I'd purchase the car anyway.

When I first saw these early pics of the next RX, I thought, "Well, what a shame. Too bad it's really ugly."

Imagine my surprise when the final production version pictures started circulating around the 'Net! Wow, what an improvement.

I prefer the smaller front overhang of this concept car to the final production version. I also prefer the hood to the final one. Nice convex rotor shape, in stead of the rain catcher we ended up with. And I'm really disappointed that the functional louvers were lost, considering all of the heat problems of the last rotary.

Here is the profile of the concept overlaid on a profile of the production car, which I posted on Rotaythreads.com. Notice the "nose" of the yellow car poking out past the red car below. The rest of the car's dimensions did not change.

I still think the most beautiful car Mazda ever produced was the RX-01, the prototype 4th Generation RX-7 that Ford pulled from production back in 1995. That car had the first MSP-RE, rated at 220 hp, weighed in at less than 2500 pounds and was slated to be priced near the level of the 2nd generation RX-7 TII.

I kinda liked that concept... I just wish the grille opening was larger... I do like the current RX-8 but I've always been a bit put off by the front it looks to sculptured and in some views it looks like the grille protrudes to far to give the car fish lips... look at the yellow one in the forum's banner and tell me it doesn't look a little like a guppy....

But I do like the Mazdaspeed front end really addressed my largest issue with the look. I like the larger grille opening that could swallow small children if they got to close....

If you are talking about the side air outlets, they ARE functional with the production RX-8.

I do like the vented hood. I see an after-factory hood being produced sometime down the road. That's something I might get, if that happens.
