Winter Driving

Hi everyone,

Great board you have here! I'm currently looking into buying my first car and the 8 is definitely one of the finalist on my list. I'm new to buying cars in general. I've never actually bought a brand new vehicle before so I'll probably have more questions about the 8 down the road...I'm just doing some research right now.

I live in Canada where the weather is quite unpredictable and was curious to know:

How many of you drive this car all season round? If so, how well does it bode in Winter driving conditions (ie. Snow, ice, etc.)?

Check out the wheel and tire forum. You find your answer over there. There are lots of discussion on the poor performance with stock tires but great performance with snow tires.

Good luck

There could be an entire site devoted to the number of threads regarding your question. Try doing a search for "winter" and see what you get.

Yup, short answer - the stock TIRES are useless and dangerous on snow/ice. Install appropriate winter tires, and the car does very well. There are many of us who drove our cars all winter with no problems - I took mine skiing to Banff area several times. I actually prefer driving the RX-8 to my Audi (AWD) because it's more fun!

Check out the Tires and Wheels section for threads on "winter tire", and also check the Canada regional section. There was a group buy last year on tires/wheels, but lots of info about what to get for winter tires and wheels.

Regards,
Gordon

Thanks for the info Gordo! One of my concerns about possibly purchasing this car was it's ability to drive all year round. I know now that I'll need to purchase a good set of winter tires to do so.

Hey, you're from Calgary?? ....Me too! It's nice to see that there are some local Rx-8 owners on this board.

Yes, it's a year around car, with a set of winter tires.
