2-3 years seems about right for average American car buyer

For me it depends on the car, the car payment, the negative equity or lack thereof, the deal I find or the deal the dealer offers me... So far I've paid off every car I've bought.

i typically keep a car for at least 8 or 9 years to reap the ownership benefits, such as lower insurance, registration etc. if u pick a quality make car & maintain it well, it will age very gracefully. when i sold my '91 honda back in 1999 i had almost 100k miles on it. and, people were still calling and offering me $5k or more for it. (i bought it new in '90 for around $11k.)

I keep my cars until I get sick of them. The more cars I have, the longer it takes for me to get sick of them. Well thats what I tell the old lady anyways.

For me it comes down to reliability, maintanence costs, and long term durability. Generally I will keep a car until the warranty wears off if it's a daily driver, and keep it indefinitely if it's a fun car. When I was buying slower, cheaper economical cars, I drove them to ground, which meant 6+ years easily. With expensive high performance cars, where maintanence is high, and longevity is in question, I will usually trade in after warranty is gone. If it gives me problems within first year, it's GONE, no questions asked. It's fun changing cars though, and boring not changing around every few years. It is expensive though.

i'll keep it until i'm tired of it or until something better comes along for the right price. that '07 skyline gtr looks mighty interesting, but if i did get one of those i'd get a used one a couple of years later. plus mazda may still make a re-vamped rx7.

regardless of what i'd trade my car for, i still love her. she's one of the best i've ever owned.

Well, my plan with this one is post warranty modding. I figure I'll go with a few MS parts in the meantime, and after the four years is up its time for forced induction and who knows what else. I plan on keeping it for years.

I heard someone on one of those financial channels say that a general rule of thumb is to pay the car off in 3 years and keep it for 7, I guess the point being that the maintenance costs start to get higher after 7 years. But I would say it depends on the car. Another school of thought is to never borrow money for a car because it is not an appreciating asset. So you pay cash for it.

I kept my last vehicle for 7 years. I had planned to keep it for at least 10, but needs change. At this point I've given up planning too far into the future - have no idea how long I'll keep my 8. I know the smart thing to do is to keep them for a long time, but I also really enjoy getting new cars - definitely a weakness of mine. I think I get a high from it, which is dangerous - a very expensive drug

I do know that after having this car and our other car (an 05 Acura TL), my handling and build quality requirements are much higher for any cars we'd get down the road. We've owned GM cars up to this point, and they don't hold a candle to these two cars...
