Twin Turbo

I was just thinking when I was driving home from my night class tonight, do you guys think it is possible to put a twin turbo on the rx8? Is it even possible though?

Im just curious thats all.

Its definately possible, just alot of work, alot of money, and alot of time for not much gain.

I think that since there is only one current solution in terms of an EMS that is readily available, we probably wont see twin turbo systems for a few years.....


We only have one forced induction kit released for this car.. the rest are "pending" and there isnt even any announcements being made about TT setups.

Give it time, but if you wanna be a champ and find a good rotary tuner, along with lots of time and money, go out and get one custom built, it would be a pretty damn sweet setup to have.

Why would you say "For not much gain"?

From what I understand, when you're looking for max power gains, a bigger snail is more efficient hp-wise and heat-wise than a sequential twin turbo setup, though less drivable. I could be wrong though.

I see what your saying. You think nos can help out the big Turb as far as lag?

Not that TT can't yield power, just that its not economy wise unless you print dollar bills, for the same money you can get more power by other means. As for turbo lag with a big single turbo, it won't be much of an issue coz a proper tuning can minimize it plus if you can keep the revs up turbo lag would be almost non-existent. I personally thought TT was a nice idea but then ball bearing turbo nowadays are not laggy anymore. The key to everything is proper tuning as mentioned by the engine gurus here.

No need for TT in my opinion. It is an added hassle and won't give you more power or faster spool than a properly sized turbo for the power figures you are looking to accomplish. A full ball bearing Apex RX6 will spool just as fast as the FD's OEM sequentials and give you more power throughout the rev range and on the top end.

Let's get singles down before we start to worry about twin setups.... why do you think the aftermarket is struggling so much with this car?

For what purpose? I dont know. Maybe just to say that you have a TT setup on your RX8 and thought if one could come out, it would be alot better then a single turbo. But with what everyone has been saying, I think the single turbo that is properly tuned will be just as better and wont be so tight underneath the hood. Actually I just read a threat on here that someone hit 310hp with the greddy kit, so thats very promising. I just wanted to ask the TT question to see what peoples thoughts are about it.

If you really wanted to, Garrett makes a variable geometry turbo. Basically there are vanes on the inside of the turbine housing. These can move to create a different A/R ratio. They can close up the area inside of the turbo to make it respond like a small turbo, and as the rpms rise, the vanes open up the inside and gives it the top end of a large turbo.

Also, there are ceramic turbine wheels (if you plan on keeping boost figures below 15 psi or so) that reduce spooling time. With a proper tuning and control of the variable turbo, you would have a really responsive car that had a good powerband.

IMO it is easier to build that a single turbo because it be easier to get around the engine mount. Cost wise is not as expensive as people think. From watching people building custom twin kits for FD's you be surprise. The hard part is the downpipes. In the 8 I don't think there is enough room for 2 turbos though. You won't gain much from it either. You will have awesome low end. For that just go for a Greedy kit and add a Int-X.

why not supercharge? the 8 lacks power at the lower end more than it does towards the higher end, I know you lose some power to the supercharger but you gain it at the low end along with extra torque where you need it most.

dont know if someone else posted this but i have a mag cant remeber which one where they have a tt rx8 well the engine is from ttrx7 they had to cut some of the fire wall so that the engine could fit but it is possible

or was it the ttrx7 but with a single turbo anyways it is possible money makes the world gor around

TTs are silly IMO, if you don't like turbo lag don't buy a turbo car. I for one kinda like the feeling and big push you get when a turbo hits hard. Also, unless we're talking huge aftermarket turbos it's entirely possible to never experience lag even with a big single turbo, it's called staying in the powerband. Lastly,, if you want to drive it around town in a civilized manner, stay out of boost and it's like driving an NA car.
