Transmission Rattle

I get a faint rattle sound from somewhere under my stick (maybe a bit forward). It sounds kinda of like a bolt is jiggling around in a small plastic compartment and the sound is muffled through the layers of the car.

I've read some posts on rattling transmissions and I'm not sure if any of the scenarios presented in them are identical to my situation.

I only get the rattle when I am in gear and the clutch is engaged or engaging. I only get it between about 2.5-5 rpm (approximate) when the engine produces the most vibration (the low freq sound).

This sound is freaking me out. I only had like 250 miles when it started (or at least when i started noticing it). Its at about 500 now and its still the same and seems to be running fine otherwise.

Other than this problem, I love the car, but it is freaking me out. Any idea what this could be?

Bump. Just want to know possible causes so the dealer won't try to weasel his way out of it.

Yah I get that too... it kinda freaks me out...

like sort of a rattley grindy noise... sounds super harsh on the gears or something..

what the heck is that

i know other cars i've had do that when you lug it.. like try to start from 500rpm or something... and put too much stress on the tranny by accelerating quickly from there...

It could be the old transmission baffle TSB. (Not sure if I named it right) Check the TSB listing sticky thread.

It took some searching, but this is the VERY old recall. Not sure if this is what you have going on, but worth a look:

this is a very big stretch, but my shift **** rattles, the rotary logo on top that is plastic is loose. on my car it is definitely that because when i take it off it doesnt make any noise. see if it is that. i had also had my tranny rebuilt because one of the bearings was cracked, but that was a very different noise. it sounded like a turbine. mazda rebuilt it in about 1 week without any hastle. they originally thought it was the recall above and tried that, but it wasnt it. i would bring it to mazda or have it towed if you are worried. the car has 500 miles so i doubt they would give you stuff about it. if you let it go though, it might get worse and may cause serious damage. the car has a warantee, i use it whenever there is a problem. the service managers at mazda know me by name because of all the problems i have had. i never give them a bad review, no matter how frustrated i am with them. because i know there will most likely be a problem. i just look forward to the day when my warantee runs out i can get a turbo

that recall doesn't really apply... i'm guessing both our cars are 2005 as his only have a few hundred...

its like when you get down low in the rpm range of cars... they have that grindy/rattley noise in the tranny... def not the stick... not a tinny heat shield sound

Mine is 04. I don't have any noises like he describes. Maybe have some one rev it while you have it on a rack and listen underneath?

I know this is an old thread... but I am having this same issue now. 2004 GT MT, was wondering if a cause/solution was ever found?

check your engine mounts and the exhaust heat shield under the car.

If your stick shift vibrates and your gauges(needles) are steady then change your engine mounts.

I had the bushing on the end of the shifter actuator melt off at the track ;-)

It made the shifter very loose and rattle a lot.....
