I take my 6th gear out of gear all the time without using the clutch, if that is what you were trying to say.

It has loosened up over time.

There is no problem in letting go off gears without a clutch as long as the rpm are not too high. You can feel the stick looser or tighter as the rpm change.
Actually, you also can change gears without a clutch (not from a standstill of course), although this requires experience and precision.
Having said that, I wouldn't let anybody mess with my 8's gears!

Why would someone want to shift without using the clutch? Is this a racing technique?

curious

The RX8 isn't a dumptruck not using the clutch is a great way to ensure that you will have expensive tranny repairs in your future..

Not using the cluth if you know how to rev match is no big deal. If you dont know how to rev match, then your stupid for trying.

Not much else to it. Not using the clutch is usually for show, but if your ever in the middle of nowhere without one, it can come in handy (this has happened to me before).

Changing gears without a clutch is a technique used in racing on cars with sequential gearboxes (Champ and F-3000) and even on cars with traditional gearboxes (F-3, F-Ford and the like).
As Genom said, on streetcars you have to rev match and usually it's at low rpm's so you can't expect to rev it up and change gears without a clutch. I find my self not using the clutch when I hit traffic. As I said before, it requires precision and can be performed on new or old cars. However, if you don’t do it right you could eventually damage the transmission and end up with expensive repairs.
