Trailer Hitches?

Does anyone have a trailer hitch they would recommend or that is specifically made for the Rx8?

I am looking for something that is fairly discreet but dont mind it obviously being visible from the rear as long as its not like those U-haul models.

I am looking for something that wont interfere with the car being lowered so that it can still do track events and all.

Just looking for something to tow tires to events and run a hitch mounted bike rack.

Any advice or pictures would be great

Thanks

IIRC, the manual says NOT to put a trailer hitch on the car.

Since when did any of us listen to the manual?

Not sure, but that may also just be in the US or North American manual.

Voodoo - there have been a number of threads on trailer hitches, some for exactly what you want to do. (Not so sure about lower-proof, though.) If you search the site for trailer hitch, those threads should turn up.

There are pictures in the threads I remember seeing here. Also posts by a few of the more knowledgable members here, showing their trailers and explaining what the constraints are.

Just do a search on "Trailer hitch." You'll find a lot of threads like this one, but among those there are posts with pictures and links to hitches made for the 8.

Reese and Draw Tite don't make one which to me says you probably should not do it.
Not that you can't, but consider these are very reputable companies and they make hitches for many small cars.

Do a search on here, you will find them and they seem to work fine but just make sure you get someone to install it who knows what they are doing. If you see a 20 year old back there you might want to reconsider.

Regardless of whether or not it can/should be done on the RX-8...I've never been a big of fan of trailer hitches on sports cars. The whole idea is so counter-producitve.

If one needs to haul whatever; get a different type of vehicle, a truck or SUV maybe. At the very least, get a 'regular' car.

What would be next? Somebody asking what's the best brand of snow plow to put in the RX-8?

So if he gets an SUV to haul his tires to track events, how will he get his RX-8 there?

Here's what I use.
Mazda RX-8 Trailer Hitch - Curt 11472 — hitchweb

Good for bike racks and tire trailers. I installed it myself, not hard if you have a Dremmel and basic socket set.

Think before you post. Think one wants to ride his 8 at a track, needs to haul wheels, whatever, etc. So one needs to take a different type of vehicle? Then how does one get the 8 there also? Can not ride 2 different cars to the same place at the same time.

Think, one wants to take his 8 to the Dragon, needs a few things, maybe wheels, tents, etc. SO taking a different car defeats the purpose of taking those wheels, tents, etc.

I have seen 8s haul stuff. Even a small travel trailer. Search and you shall fine

You need to think even more before you post.

What you said makes no sense at all. Have you ever been to a track event? If yes, what did you see around?

When I go to track events i see many people hauling entire cars with their trucks/SUVs anyway. Some of those cars are not street legal to begin with. So why did you find my post so irrelevant? People haul **** to track events with other vehicles all the time. Isn't that the norm? At times the parking lot outside is full of trucks/suvs and trailer, lol

people also bring other vehicles full gear (tires, tools, parts, etc) to track events in addition to the actual car. I'm still puzzled by your argument.

Beside, when was the last time you saw anybody hauling tires to a track event with their 911, Lambo, or any other high end machine? So why do it with the 8?

Yes, i'm very proud of my 8

If I was into autoX I would put a hitch on mine, they have some nice little trailers to haul tires and other stuff. I don't see the difference between hauling a small trailer with tires vs hauling 3 extra people in the car.

There are members here who use their street legal 8s to tow a small trailer with tires and stuff to track events. Track events aren't limited to those who can afford haulers.

Voodoo said he wanted to do that, and also use a hitch-mounted bike rack. I think he was better served by posts pointing him toward information on hitches than by posts telling him he's not allowed to haul his bicycle unless he buys another vehicle.

Yes, that last phrase isn't exactly fair. But as long as I'm going over the line with an unauthorized attempt at moderating a fellow member, I may as well embrace the curent culture.

I'd love to see a Lambo pulling a trailer. Especially the modern Lambos that look more like traction motors than cars.

Good points Ken.

I guess i was more arguing about not using the RX-8 as a pick up truck, LOL.

Also, i do own a an older/beater pickup truck - precisely because i know that having a sports car as an only vehicle is not the most practical thing in the world.

And to answer your earlier question, if i needed to bring tires to an event, i would simply drive my 8 and ask my best buddy to drive my truck with the track tires on it.

But your points make sense. I guess hauling a mild load with the 8 would be ok

Thanks for the responses guys, i actually have a 4 door f-250 that i currently use for my towing of things. But living in New Orleans it is a lot easier to park the rx8 than my 21 ft long truck with the bike rack on. I dont plan on "towing" anything othert than what some have mentioned. A small harbor freight trailer with tires and a tent, small tool box. most likely 150 lbs max.

I have seen the curt and it seems to be the only hitch available. I made a new thread because I couldnt find any results under the key words trailer hitch or hitches. I was hoping for something that a guy had made for my porsche and some friends 350z's. it is a design that hides under the liscense plate and uses a quick on and off system to be removed when not in use to retain the stock look of the car. Also it is basically just a thick plate that bolts to the fram of the car and does not ad the bulky extra weight of a draw tight or the curt hitch.

But thanks again guys looks like the curt is the only way to go, luckily it is easily removed with a couple hand tools.
