Thinking of buying an rx8, worth it?

Hi,

I'm relativley new to this forum, although I have been looking on it for about a month now. I was thinking of buying an rx8, but wasn't sure if it was worth it. I have a situation where I am moving to Japan for a year for school in 2009 or 2010 of september (most likely 2010). I was wondering what all of your suggestions are: (1) Should I sell the 8 when i go to Japan so I don't have it sit there and lose value, (2) Should I keep it and leave it while I leave; (3) not buy one and wait until I return; or (4) buy one, sell it before I leave, return and buy the new 09 8? Any suggestions would be appreciated!

P.S. I wasn't sure if this was suppose to go into the selling/looking for forum or not, so sorry in advance if in wrong place.

because I'm still not exactly sure, and wondering if its a smart choice financially because i don't know if the value will be worth the price i pay - looking at resae vaue and how much money i loose. Since i woud think you guys would have more knowledge on the 8's decline of value, you guys would have better judgement then my guess. Just wanted some imput, thats all. thank you.

I don't blame you for not wanting to wait but its well known a rotary engined car is not a good car to have stored for a year. Perhaps there is someone you trust to take it for periodic brief drives while your gone and cover all maintenance and services. Not likely. If you went ahead and got it then tried to sell it when you left for school you would be out several thousand or more just on depreciation. Again not the ideal car for that situation either. I agree with nycgps and wait or perhaps get you something a little more sporty and storable in the meantime. By the time you come back, there could be an all new rotary car out by then.

yeah, thanks for the suggestion. But if I bought any kind of car, wouldn't i be out a couple grand from depreciation alone? an rx8 is pretty sick, I like them because there aren't that many around here. I was also looking at s2000s, but i would prefer the 8. Do u have any suggestions for sick cars i wont lose too much on? I mean a couple grand isn't a lot to me for two years (if that works on an 8 i'll do it). but it seems like depreciation is a lot on any car. I was thinking of lease but after lease I will be left with nothing ane be out more than 2 grand for sure, so its not worth it at all. what would you guys do in my situation

The biggest depreciation hit is in the first year or two. If you buy a used one, then the original owner already took that hit.

Look up the blue book values of comparable '04 through '07 models. That will give you an idea of the loss in value. Although that's not really a loss in value as much as it's the car's lifetime being used up. If you think you'd buy one from a dealer, look up the typical wholesale, retail and "private sale" values.

If you're going to need wheels between now and Japan, you need to get something. For short term needs, the older the better. As long as it runs. The ultimate was a $50 car for the summer.

that would be awesome to do, but sounds like its costly. There is a lot of work into buying a car in another ocuntry and having it imported and being certified to run in the states. Although, do you know anyone who has done this or looked into it? But I don't think its even possible to have a drivers license or temp while on a student visa in Japan, correct me if I'm wrong.

Yeah I was thinking of just buying a beater, but I'm not into that. Kinda cramps my style. And i know I loose value on a car and its not an investment, I just want to loose the least amount while still have a nice car. And its going to be for atleast one to two years.

Thanks everyone again for the input
