Well, mine wasn't easy to start. I wonder if I flooded it when I ran it for a couple minutes to get the fuel stabilizer into the fuel lines.

Five rounds of the factory anti-flood procedure got it going.

Then I hit a deer with it. Guess what? A single headlight on a Shinka costs over a grand. Minor damage, but the insurance check is $5,200--nearly totaled the car.

Now that that fun bit of information has been related, we continue to need more RX-8s, even if we aren't down my 2006.

For those of you who are signed up, but who haven't responded recently, I hope you'll resume.

And those who haven't yet joined, I hope you will.

Bought my RX-8 new in 2004. Fun car. Traded it in May of 2014 with only 30,000 miles on it.

Experience:

It flooded once. Nightmare experience. It took me 6 hours to get it unflooded.

Once I got it running again I replaced the ignition coils and later the spark plugs and leads. Then one day, after that, it gave a hint of flooding again. And I was "out in the boonies" so-to-speak. A very uncomfortable feeling.

Other then that, a great car. I really enjoyed it for almost 10 years of ownership. It was the 6-speed manual Sport model. I traded it in on a new 2014 BMW; better MPG by a long shot, better power, better torque, etc. And no flooding. And the Bimmer has much less road noise.

So, how have these cars been doing lately?

Our reliability stats for the RX-8 now include owner experiences through March 31, 2015. (Others are nearly a year behind.)

In terms of repair trips per 100 cars per year ("low" is best):

2006 RX-8: 37, low, very small sample size
2005 RX-8: 74, moderate, very small sample size
2004 RX-8: 46, low, small sample size

The sample sizes continue to shrink, as more members have been selling than buying RX-8s. I'd very much like to get the sample sizes back where they need to be, so hope more owners will join.

Our reliability stats for the RX-8 now cover the year ending June 30, 2015. (Others are over a year behind, and so report how these cars were doing when a year younger.)

Repair trips per 100 cars:

2006 RX-8: 22, low, very small sample size
2005 RX-8: 71, low, very small sample size
2004 RX-8: 30, low, small sample size

The sample sizes probably explain the variation from year to year. With more participants we could provide much better information on these cars.

We're finishing up another round of the survey, and once again the 2005 and 2006 barely reached the minimum for even qualified stats. If I didn't personally own a 2006, that year would not have made it.

Especially since I own an RX-8 and love the cars I'd like to provide much better information on them. To do this, though, I need the help of more owners.

We've updated our reliability stats for the RX-8 to include owner experiences through September 30, 2015. In terms of repair trips per 100 cars per year:

2006 RX-8: 26, low, very small sample size
2005 RX-8: 78, moderate, very small sample size
2004 RX-8: 22, low, small sample size

For the details, including repair descriptions, and to sign up to help improve this information--we badly need more participants if we're to provide reasonably precise stats these cars:

Those sensors go bad all the time. The only way to replace it is by buying the tank, or ignoring it and just keep checking your coolant level.

We'll have updated stats again next month, and unfortunately the number of responses hasn't increased. Unless more owners join, we won't be able to provide stats for the RX-8 much longer.

My '04 had the engine replaced by the dealer at 91,000 mi. under warranty. Zero problems after install.

We've updated our reliability stats for the RX-8 to include owner experiences through the end of 2015, about eight months ahead of other sources. In terms of repair trips per 100 cars per year--lower is better:

2006 RX-8: 28, low, very small sample size
2004 RX-8: 46, low, small sample size

We continue to barely be able to cover these cars at all. To provide clear reliability information on the RX-8 more participants are much needed.

We've updated our reliability stats for the RX-8 to include owner experiences through September 30, 2016. In terms of repair trips per 100 cars per year (lower is better):

2006 RX-8: 13, low, very small sample size
2005 RX-8: 97, moderate, very small sample size
2004 RX-8: 80, moderate, small sample size

Additional participants would be very helpful. I'd very much like to cover other model years and provide more precise stats.
