Shutdown fan has never come on (??)

Hi folks,

I'm a little weirded out because the post-shutdown fan on my car has never once come on. I keep reading about everyone else's turning on and making loud noises and staying on for 5 or 10 minutes. Do you think there's a problem, or should I not worry about it?

Anyone else never had their fan come on?

Thanks.

I have heard it. Seems like I heard it more when it was hotter. I may not live far from you so may be experiencing similar weather. I'll try to remember to listen to it after my 45 mile drive this afternoon when I shut mine off. It may just be it's not been hot enough and/or driven hard enough when hot enough to warrant coming on.

Mine's only come on twice (that I've heard it) in the 3 1/2 weeks we've had it. Maybe because we live in a relatively moderate climate compared to some, the engine doesn't need it as much.

Thanks, it's nice to get feedback, especially from people in the same general area.

I don't suppose I need to get overly concerned about this, but as fate would have it, I've got to go by the dealer tomorrow to get fitted for a wheel lock key anyway. (They forgot to give me mine.) I'll probably ask them about it just to make sure.

If it helps, in Miami it's been pretty warm so far for the 3 weeks I've had the car and I've only noticed the fan 3 or 4 times. And I look back at the car every time I aprk it so I would imagine I would notice if it was every time. I dont think it's anything to worry about as I havent had any temp issues with it at all.

Mine only comes on because it's been between 90 to 100 degrees outside. It usally comes on when I park it in my garage. Since there is no moving air to cool it off. This is also only when it's been very hot outside.

Cool The Hotter the Temp the More the Fan

I am in the middle of the desert and the temp is usually about 90 to 103. My fan comes on when ever I drive it for at least a half hour or so, for roughly about 10 to 15 minutes.

I have been "Experiencing the excess heat in the cabin", and today was the first day while driving that it hasn't been over 90. It was actually 80 driving to work today. No sign of extra heat around the gearshift, or the foot wells. This is after driving for over 30 min. I also had the A/C turned off to make sure.

I think when it's really hot outside, the car turns on it's extra fans even while driving to blow away the heat. That is why your feeling some extra heat in the cabin, because the car is just trying to get it away from the engine compartment.

I think this is why some people haven't really experince this situation, unless it's been hot where they live. Remember people we got our cars delivered at the very middle of summer. It's been really hot here in Texas at least.

Only happened to me twice. Both were during hot days after spirited CITY driving.

Never seems to happen if cruising on the highway, more airflow so it gets less hot.

Thanks all.

I asked the dealer about it today and they said it was nothing to worry about. They asked if I do a lot of highway driving, and I said it's about 80% highway. Then they said my engine just probably hasn't gotten hot enough to warrant the fan coming on. We've had some 95 degree days around here, but I guess the highway driving helps.

Suppose I won't worry about it....

Mine came on today after a short drive at lunch. Ran at least 6 minutes after shut down. Then it ran again at home tonight. Probably more than 4 minutes, may have been 6 (had to run inside first and then went back in garage and started timing it). Only about 79 degrees at lunch, short highway (2 miles maybe less) then one stop light and about 1/4 mile about 30-33mph in 3rd (30-3300 rpm). On evening return from work, it's 45 miles, mostly highway, except last 1/4 mile. 71 degrees, high humidity. Go figure...

I live in North Florida and my fan has come on about 5 or 6 times. But the times it comes on seems completely arbitrary and/or random.

I have driven the RX-8 like crazy in 90-95 degree weather accelerating as fast as I can and taking curves as fast as I dare. I shut the car of - no fan.

I have taken a 2 mile trip to the house from the golf range driving like grandma (driving the car, not my tee-shots) in 80 degree weather. I shut the car off - the fan comes on and runs at super-high speed for 12 full minutes. I say super-high speed, but it is always that same speed - really really fast.

I have stopped the car and heard the fan think about coming on (begins to slowly rotate) and then decides not to.

The biggest mystery to me is why I can sit and idle in my driveway after a hard drive and hear no fan, yet when I turn off the engine, the fan comes on. Why doesn't the fan run when the engine is on? Why does it come on after I shut the engine off? It makes no sense to me.

I am worried that I may make a couple of very short trips with the fan running for 12-15 minutes after each stop. Wouldn't this come very close to running the battery dead?

Sorry so long - first post...

Fanning the thread....

Mine comes on sometimes....sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes it comes on after the car has hardly been running at all....then it doesn't come on after a lengthy drive on the highway. As long as it turns itself off and doesn't kill the battery, more power to it! LOL
