I have a check engine light in my rx8 and I diagnosed it to be the "Secondary Air Injection" the tech said it had to do with the emissions sensor or something like that, and I would have to replace a pump...does anyone know what I have to do and how much it would be?

The air pump pumps air into the catalytic converter when the engine is cold, to make the cat more efficient.

First off, what year and how many miles on your RX-8?
Second, are you certain that you need to replace the pump itself? Or just that the code points towards something in that particular emissions system?

I mean, chances are that the pump has seized and blown the fuse. If that's the case, the air pump is on the passenger side strut tower, near the washer fluid bottle. And yes, it's definitely easy enough for someone to do at home. Just be sure that you get the one way check valve with the new pump.

I have a 2005 GT about to hit 92,000miles on it. I was told that probably the pump is needed to be replaced. Do you know how much it will be costing? I'm gonna go to any mechanic right now so they can tell me what it def is. I dont want this becoming a thousand dollar job when it can probably be 300 or something less.

Where do you live?
Maybe there's a forum member that lives near you that might be willing to do the job right the first time, save you a smidge of cash, and make a couple bucks in the process.

It's easy to replace. Do some searches in the DIY section. Some have even repaired theirs without buying one.

WOW it's expensive...$400 I called a junkyard and they said they can get me a used one for $150. Wow I couldn't find this air pump anywhere. Somewhere I'd def HAVE to do, but it's a matter of how much I want to pay for it. I live in Northern NJ, 10 mintues from NYC. It just sucks how Mazda is asking for $105 to bring in the car to check and another Mazda $150 to scan it.

There is a DIY or at least a thread where someone repaired it themselves, you'd have to search for it though. If I find it I'll link it here.

Use you P0410 for the search criteria and you will also learn you don't even really need it if really low on cash.

The air pump makes the engine sound like a go kart when it's cold right? What symptom do u have if it's going out? Mine sounds normal.

Hey guys help me here please. I have an 05 rx8 manual transmission, and the mechanic has just told me there is something wrong with my secondary air injection pump. He said its causing a mis fire; how can I get one for decent price (as the dealership charges a lot of money). Also, how do I know this mechanic is not just trying to reap me off?!!

He is trying to rip you off, he's not a good mechanic, or both.

The air pump does nothing but pump air into your exhaust on cold start up. It can throw a code if disconnected or not functioning, but it will not cause a misfire or throw the same code as a misfire.

Get your codes read at your local autoparts store and do a search for them on the forum or searching google with site:rx8club.com code pXXX

That should get you going in the right direction and not buying things that you don't need to fix a problem that they can't cause.

Like Fuztupnz saids, the air pump.is part of the emission control system. Its turn on only at cold start up lower than i think 200 celsius or something. By pumping exhaust air back to the combusion process it helps to warm the cat warm up much faster.

If the pump is dead, it doesnt effect performance in any way. Just longer warm ups.

Its so easy to.check thr pump, its either on or off. So at cold start. Listen to the pump. If u hear it whine. It works. Otherwise its dead

Wow thanks guys!! That's the one thing I was worried about that this air injection pump would affect my engine or the performance on the car. Oh better yet, I also just purchased a new engine from them and had it installed, however, after they installed it it's showing a blinking engine light and they told me not to drive the car to fast for at least 500k miles as that could blow the engine. Their excuse was that because it's a new engine, it has to warm up to regular driving and the old parts and things in the car. How true is that? Finally, they tell me it's a brand new engine with zero miles, so after they install the engine shouldn't my old miles on my dashboard reset back to zero???

but I can tell you right now he is lying. He doesn't know what he is talking about.

a Brand new Engine cost MORE THAN 6K. I seriously don't think you paid that much. and as far as I remember you can't even order a New Engine from Mazda anymore.

and Blinking CEL usually means Misfire. Have you reset the E-shaft profile yet?

did you replace any of the coils and plugs with the "new engine" ?

Also, no your miles should no reset to zero.... The odometer is to show how many miles are on the car not the engine.

He told me he purchased the engine from a Mazda dealership here in Houston (Russell & Smith Mazda). Three months ago I had new spark plugs put in it (NGK) I believe is the name of the plugs and now the mechanic stated that those were bad and due to that he had to replace them for new ones, which he then charged me $70 for. Guys you have no idea how much you are helping me because I am going to go to the mechanic today and speak with him. However, any recommendations on what to ask him specifically?

If he didn't replace the coils, you should look into that if resetting the E-shaft profile doesn't help with the mis-fire.

Like i said before go to an autozone/advanced/napa and get your codes read. Post up the code numbers here if you can't find info on them. It's free.


You should seriously shop for a new mechanic if you aren't comfortable working on the car yourself. This guy is either a complete idiot, liar, or both. Don't go back to the same guy.

Quick question....I just installed RB rev8 + RB straight pipe The sound outside the car is good, but i can hear the air moving through the straight pipe under my feet?? It kind of sounds like an exhaust leak, but i check every connection/weld. Also is it normal for the secondary air injection pump start hum louder after your midpipe install? It sounds like my car is going to take-off for the first 30sec after a cold start.

It's possible that you'll here it more with a catless midpipe and even more so with with the non-resinated straight pipe. The cat soaks up a lot of sound.
