I remember months before the WRX came out (as I've been on a Subaru Impreza board since long before the WRX), there was one spotted in Colorado probably 6 months before it was actually for sale here.
It had Jersey plates, seeing as how Subaru of America's home office is in Cherry Hill, NJ
