best bet would be to read the brochure, and pick the features and package you want. everyone has different tastes, i got mine fully loades, other people get the base model. go to the dealership and look at different ones.
The only difference in horsepower is between the automatic and the manual. The 6-speed manual has the most hp and torque. There are no options that modify the performance of the car. You can say that a fully loaded RX-8 is slower than a base RX-8, due to the weight of the extra options (e.g. moonroof, spoiler, appearance kit weigh some). It's minimal differences... basically, all 6-speed MT packages have the same performance.
Mazdaspeed RX-8 is not out yet, even in Japan (AFAIK). Only the Mazdaspeed "bodykit" is out and some other parts, but no official Mazdaspeed model per se.
I seem to recall that the mazda site has one of those build-your-own thingies, that should give you an idea of what the different packages and all are.
If you plan on building a MazdaSpeed RX8, you would want to get a 6speed RX8 with the Sport Package and go from there. That will make it so you have a little less parts to buy to do the conversion. Also keep in mind while you can buy MOST of the parts to make a MazdaSpeed Replica....you cant buy them all, such as the Engine Internals!
I agree with the previous postings, go with the 6 speed if you can. In addition, the GT package is very nice if your budget allows. The leather, power seats and lower back support make for a much more comfortable ride. The GT includes all the other extras in the other touring packages, including, but not limited to, the 300 W Bose system with the noise compensation technology, and the powered sunroof. However, no matter what you decide on, enjoy it and don't look back.
