RX-8, long rides and noise-canceling headphones

Anyone try Bose QuietComfort headphones on a long, droning, 75-mph road trip?

I love the sound of my 8 but, just for the hell of it, I've worn these on some 6-hour interstate drives and wow! All the tire and road roar just melts away. Yet I could still easily hear horns, sirens, even the radio. And when I arrived I felt, well, surprisingly fresh. Less tired than a 6-hour drive normally makes me feel. Same relief you get from wearing 'em on a long flight.

If you drive long distances, think about it.

Which ones are you using? I was thinking about getting a couple of pairs for the next time I take a long ride with my wife. I drove 5+ hours twice this year (once to CT and once to PA) and the droning after the first 2 hours just sucks.

I was about to say that driving with headphones on is reckless, but you say you can still hear other cars? Do you hear when someone is passing you?

Yes, I can hear other cars and when someone's passing. (I should point out that I suspect it's illegal to wear headphones while driving. Were I to be pulled over, I'd try to explain how these are noise-canceling phones with NO music on them, and the fact that they keep me fresh makes them a safe thing to do. Whether or not a cop would buy that, of course, is a crapshoot. But I would offer the phones to him so he could see there's nothing playing on 'em.)

I'm using an old pair of Bose QuietComfort 15s, which Bose has replaced with the 25s. My 15s are starting to disintegrate around the ear pads, so I'm thinking of upgrading. I've had 'em almost ten years now.

(Incidentally if anyone's wondering, they're really good at noise reduction. Audio quality? Not bad, but certainly not in the same league as really good phones like Sennheisers or Grados. But I don't use them for that; I use 'em to quiet down noise. They work great on the subway, incidentally! Think of it this way: it's probably like getting the benefits of Dynamat sound deadening, only without the hassle. Of course, you can enjoy the benefits of Dynamat without wearing a pair of phones on your head. Though the Bose are quite comfy.)
