A reflection: Rx-8 love

You know, with all of the recent problems that seem to be surfacing, I thought I would share a personal experiance with you, in the hopes that I can reach out to other enthusiasts who really enjoy the car for what it is.

When I first bought the car, I wasn't looking for some street machine, nor was I looking for fuel economy, thats what the honda is for. I was looking for somemthing that was pleasurable to drive. I was looking for my "weekend fun" car that me and my friends could get some use out of. I test drove a few cars "comparable" to the Rx-8 but none of them really grabbed me. Then I remembered seeing an ad in a magazine about some new rotary sports car with four doors. "interesting" I thought, perhaps I should check this out, after all, the rx-7 was a fantastic car...

I can honestly say, the moment I stepped into the car I was hooked.

I went on the best test drive of my life, and soon after purchased the very same 8.

This last weekend I took it to the winding backroads of Missouri, and I had a blast. Rounding a bin at almost twice the posted limit, I felt as though I was one with the car, it responded to my every whim, I took corners at mind- numbing speeds and yet she begged for more. As I listened to the purr of the engine I thought:
"No other car that I have driven has ever felt like this."
It was an extension of the mind and the body, it all seemed like a dream.

After an hour, I felt pretty fulfilled, so I brought her back to town to cool down and started up the radio only to be reminded of the amazing quality of said item. I realized that I had an addiction; to a car.

As I was about the close the garage door, I took one last look back at her, and she called to me. I had to drive her again.

I've never stopped loving her, every weekend she is washed, regardless of if I even drove her or not the previous week. No other car has ever made me feel like I am a part of it, not just the driver, but a piece of the car itself, not even my friend's corvette.

No, it's not the fastest car for the money.
No, it's not a great "economy car"
No, it won't pwn your best friend's supra.

But show me a supra that has a 1.3L heart, and four comfortable seats.

I know I will probably catch hell for this or be called a fanboi, but this is the most amazing car that I have ever owned, driven, or even fantasized about, and in all honesty, I can't imagine myself with any other.

Perhaps this feeling is zoom-zoom.

Thumbs up

Fanboi! Nah, j/p. Dang man, all that passion for your car...you need a woman! Okay, j/p again. I'm sprung on my car, too! I hardly drive, I take BART most of the time, anymore and when I get to its like having a date with a long-distance relationship. All the anxiety and all. Nice to hear someone "feeling" their car, instead of bitching about MPG or oil-burning for a change.

Just to clarify for any future reference, yes I do "have a woman" and yes she does come first.

But the 8 is a damn close second.

There's too many "concessions" in your post. Some RX8 drivers carry around a back pocket full of little "yes, buts...". The prescription is a swift kick in the nuts already, hard enough for them to let go of those little inferiority complexes.

Some RX8 are treated with enough care that they become imbued with an actual spirit. Every day I drive, I clean. About 45 minutes. Every day. I clean myself daily, I clean my sled dog daily. Why not?

The fact is I own everybody everyday. To work and from work is pure ownage. This is fast, this is fast, and there are very very few fast cars like it on the streets.

When RX8 drivers share their experiences on the road, very seldom do they say anything about driving at night. I can understand why, because weird things happen at night with this creature. I can't explain how this happens, but some nights... one moment I'm cutting a path through the road, and the next moment I find myself suddenly in a stealth figher on a midnight bombing run dodging flak. I'm hoping this feature is just a simulation built into the latest flash as some Japanese programmer's joke, but then again it can feel strangely real.

And despite all the high technology, I love how the makers infused some old school with the new, in the form of the quick-stow Katana slot in the back seat. For the American market it's named "ski slot" or some bs, which is just a poor translation.

I was trying to get at the fact that I DON'T race people.

And no amigo, it is not fast, it is quick. There is a very big difference.

A corvette is fast.
A Lamborghini is FAST.
A Rx-8 is quick.

RX-8 is truly addicting. i find myself looking back at it when i park it and i'm thinking man it needs to driven again haha. Can't wait to drive it again haha.....and my friends are always like, man u love ur car......and i'm like huh? and theyre like ur always lookin back at it every few seconds. Hahaha. i guess its my kid......wanna make sure its ok.

But yeah the RX-8 is all about the feeling and connection you get from linking up the gear shift and steering it through turns.....feels like a fantasy at times......the car definitely somehow links up to your mind and reads your thoughts at the same time your inputing actions into the car. It's very responsive because it is almost like you are one with the car. Every jab of the throttle, every turn you make......no suprises...its predictable.

I love my car. I get the chance to drive a lot of cars that are "faster" than the 8. I usualy walk away impressed. That is until I climb back behind the wheel of my 8. This car is an addiction. I get such a thrill out of the balance, how easy it is to drive fast, the smoothness and sound of that rotory motor. I have 43,000 miles on her. I cannot imagine living without her.

Oh, my wife knows her place. OMG. Here she comes I gota

I am exactly the same way, after driving the z06, I was VERY impressed, but it didn't have the same "feel" that the 8 did. I swear it is alive.

The 8 was the first car that has taken my mind off of motorcycles, although I sheepishly admit to also loving my first gen. Miata. Meanwhile all my friends were buying really cool cars; Boxster, 350z, G35 coupe, 300C, 3 series coupes…which even though I drove them all none hooked me.

One day I drove shotgun in a former co-workers yellow RX8. I wasn’t sure about the styling, but was surprised about the comfort and space. We followed another co-worker in his car, and he was flooring it off of every turn. She floored it too, usually turning onto a street in 2nd at 2500rpm, and complained that it wasn’t fast enough. I drove it back to the office, and being schooled on 600cc bikes I just got the car. She remarked “why does it feel so much faster with you driving it?” It felt as flickable as my old Miata, but with an engine that felt like nothing else. I was finally hooked on a car.

Fast forward 2 years later. My ’05’s glow has waned a bit, with a new tranny, 3 new lights, and a clutch squeak that won’t go away. Maybe this site also contributed, it’s become more of a downer than anything useful. But I still look forward to every day I drive it, and that’s a first for me even though I’ve owned some interesting cars. I’d still buy one today over anything else, as I still think it’s the most fun I can get from a decent daily driver.

I'm with everyone else in this thread. My RX8..is what I look foward to when I wake up in the morning. The day just isn't right if I don't get my morning drive in the 8...nothing has any feeling without it. I let it warm up for a minute or two, sloth my way through the neighborhood, just hearing the deep growl of the rotary at low RPM. The "pop-pop" I get when letting off the gas it highly addicting, too.

One or two miles down the road...highway. I have no choice, as I always tell my passenger, I HAVE to floor it to get into the flow of traffic ---- normally there isn't any there to have to speed in front of. I pull out slowly at first, and just glide to redline in first, second, and finally trounce into third...it's heavenly. I make the first right, to get ANYWHERE in my area..and that's where the fun begins.

You see, I can either stay straight, or make this right turn. Going straight will lead me quickly and directly to the nearest town...but the right turn, will lead me around to a windy piece of road called "Shady Lane", and that's where all the fun begins.

By then, the tires are warm, the engine is begging to be pushed, and the road is just getting tighter. The tires squeal as I fly into the first turn, the backend is always a little squeamish here until the tires are properly hot. This is home to me...my own little piece of existance, ecstacy, warmth..

I am in love with a machine.

It's nice to see that other owners have found the true meaning of this car, or should I say, this sentient being?

Thats pretty interesting. I made the trek back home to Missouri from NM over the holidays and hit my favorite set of twisty roads west of St.Louis in Wine Country. I have to say that the RX8 is always fun to drive, but I feel fortunate to have miles and miles of great tight, twisty, hilly, wooded roads at my disposal close to my home in Warrenton. I can hit a variety of these B roads and easily put 250 miles of twisty pavement under me without covering the same tarmac twice. Great for sport bikes and supermotoards as well!! You know you have had a good drive when you feel worn-out after 3 hours of twisties!!

Anyway I just saw the Missouri reference and had to comment, because I had a very similar experience.

ok not to be left out.i think the first car had one seat.it was fun and nobody believed this thing could out run a horse.then to have the rest of the world fill the fun and pleasure they added a second seat.....no down the road a bit there are days you wish it had only one seat because when your having fun the rest are losing there mind on how much your into it and they are not even there(they are in the car but you don't notice untill they sceam!)in my mind.this car has been the great escape from everyday troubles and fustrations to know two things can move as one(yes i have a wife and kids).the fun starts here!!!!
