Because the fuel gauge would move faster than it!!!!!!!

although im getting good gas milages right now for some reason.. im not even at half a tank of gas and im at about 160km...
so i shjould be getting 320-350km this tank of gas... This is in Liters BTW... my usual is about 300... i came from drving a v8 trans am.. so 300km a tank with premium.. is still the same.. just now im driving a better looking car

Sorry to inject a notion of seriousness to an otherwise silly thread, but it dawned on me the other day that Mazda made the speedo digital because the speedo is the only gauge that truly requires displaying a specific measure of units, MPH or KPH. All the other gauges display something relative, or RPM which is not metric or "english". Even the temperature gauge does not need celsius or fahrenheit units, just a relative display of hot or cold... perhaps they should have made a speedo that has no numbers, just :
slow, fast, illegal, and "if you live, you get away with it"

I think it comes down to preference. I'm more of a exacting person. I'd rather have the numbers than an estimate. If it came with all the gauges in Digital, with a much higher refresh rate, I'd be all over it.

haha, so true too. I think I'm averaging right around 14-15 mpg since I bought the car in Feb. 05.
I especially like how fast it goes from 1/2 tank to 1/4 tank.

The worst thing about the digital speedo is it is now even easier for the wife to lean over and see just how fast you're really going. 
Remember the old 'forced perspective' argument we all used to use with an analog speedo:
"Honey, I'm not really speeding. The needle just looks that way from where you're sitting."<said in your most conciliating tone as you continue to keep your right foot buried>

Normally I prefer analog over digital. Seems faster to read. That's one of the reasons I prefer an analog watch. You can read analog at a glance—a bit faster than digital—because you don't have to take the extra time to actually "read" and process the numbers. Don't know why—maybe the eye can read "position" faster than it can read numbers.
But in the 8, I actually prefer the digital speedometer—no way to mistakenly confuse it with the analog tach.

The 8 is my first car with a digital speedo. I was initially resistant, but very quickly found I liked it better than analog. The point was driven home recently when I had a rental beast with an analog speedo, and I *really* struggled to read it.
