There is a 2009 RX8 for sale locally with some R3 features (recaros, 19s) but not advertised as an R3.

Is there a definitive way to confirm it is a real R3 and not a sport with seats and wheels added? Maybe a unique character in the VIN?

The only way to know for sure is to call MNAO with the VIN number and ask them for the original production info.

Technically every single part that makes an R3 an R3 is something that can be done to a Sport or GT. Although most of it would be prohibitively expensive.

If you look at the front subrfame, you should see some of the foam protruding out from the holes where it was filled. I doubt that would have been duplicated.

call mazda with the vin is the easiest way

look for red stitching on the shifter, handbrake, and steering wheel as well as the arm rests.
only R3's have red stitching.

All swappable if someone is looking to replicate an R3. As are the wheels, front subframe, body panels, etc...

Only for-sure what to know if you suspect a fraud is to call MNAO with the vin.

You can tell also by the shocks, sway bars, if it has a sun roof, etc.

Series 2 Grand Tourings and R3s were the only models with the advanced keyless entry (card keys).

BUT Grand Touring were the only ones with automatic climate control while the R3 had the manual climate control like the other models. This feature would not be an easy swap.

So look for manual climate control with advanced keyless entry!

Depends what country the OP is located in. In canada the R3 can have climate control as well as headlight wash jets.
