Quick little help

So i went and looked at the RX8 and everything was perfect on it..a few little small things but nothing major..the front bumper had a little crack, rear bumper had a little scratch, and on the inside the driver side heated seat switch didn't have a light. The heated seats worked just the switch's light was out..

Now i was on the inside of the car and my grand pop and my dad were on the outside...they thought the engine sounded weird..like a knock kinda..the owner said that is how all rx8s sound. Is this true?
Do your engines sound a little different due to the rotary engine?

anyone have any videos of a stock engine bay? Just so i can show my dad and prove nothing is wrong.

bump for someone more sabby to read.

I'm not the most technical on the forum (or anywhere close), but the engine definitely shouldn't knock. detonation is one of the leading causes of losing our engines.

Where are you located? One of us might be able to give it a listen for you.

NautyOne...
In the video you posted, I think I can hear one pop every time the revs die down. Is that normal, would you say? I get the same thing and I'm wondering if I need to switch to using 93 octane from 89.

It could be normal depending on how loud/hard the knock is. It is hard to say without hearing the car myself.

Dude...if you really want it, it would be a good idea to just take it to the dealership and let them do a pre-purchase inspection, and ask for a compression test. It will cost you though...probably 100 bucks or so, especially if they do the compression test.

The car does make a quiet knocking sound. But if it is really loud, then there maybe an issue.

i think i know what your "knock" is, the RX-8 especially when not fully warmed up will have these "farting sounds" these are the sound of extra fuel being ejected from the engine and perfectly normal, goes down when engine warms. it should be REVVVV, *let go* pop pop pop pop, and when warm, maybe REVVV *let go* revvvvv pop... revvv

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ExTPnbpLp3o

please don't rev it when it's cold.

Find out if you have the new stronger starter.

It could possibly be Ignition Coils and or battery along with this.

from time to time it would take about 2 seconds to start, and it's perfectly fine as long the engine is turning over at proper speed.

you may want to get that car checked out dood... just to be on the safe side, rotaries arent a joke and not a toy either. but lots of people like to think they are. while they have their advantages and can be very strong you need to maintain them properly or they will get a blown apex seal and once thats done the engine is...

heres my few pointers::
1)let the engine warm up to normal opertaing temperature before driving off (usually about 7 minutes for me in Cali)
2)every other fill up check your dipstick, rotaries burn off oil so you will need to add some every couple fill ups (roughly 1 quart per oil change or so)
3) "A redline a day keeps the carbon away". Redlining is good for these engines, it helps break away the carbon build up. so actually if you dont redline it once a day you could actually hurt yourself in the long run. just never redline or punch it when the engine is still warming up.

other than that just have fun, im sure other members will chime in with more than what i had to say.

It should beep as you hit the redline, its just letting you know to shift thats all.

it shouldnt click or anything tho, if its clicking then you need to have that checked out.
