Exclamation Possible motor failure?

OK.... Just got my 8 2 months ago...
to make a long story short, the other day i decided to do a burnout. I lit the tires up for maybe 4-5 seconds and parked. When i had the car in neutral i noticed a knocking noise. My heart dropped. I shut down let everything cool off. turned it on and hour later and it was still knockin in nuetral.. So i drive away, when i put it in gear and drive it doesnt knock. but now it grinds 3rd gear bad and when im cruising and put it in 6th and let off the clutch it grinds while im driving...

so keep in mind it only knocks in neutral when reving the motor, it grinds 3rd gear and grinds all of 6th after the clutch is let out...

what could my problem be? I brought it to my dealer on friday and im waiting until monday to follow up... Let me know what i should be expecting...

My 8 is bone stock... just did an oil change 2 weeks ago....

Help me out
thanx in advance.....

Sounds more like a clutch/tranny failure than an engine failure.

Don't know bro, as others have said it sounds more like a transmission/clutch issue. Keep us posted on the results.

Where from the motor?

Is the noise coming from a point higher or lower than the top of the gas pedal?

if it occurs only in neutral, that tells me it's a clutch/tranny issue. If it was the motor, it would happen at all times, I'd imagine.

1-why wont they give you a loaner when its in the warantee if your car is down?
2-is it because of your age (one would assume from the stupid i did a burnout comment)
3-if your local in NY you should have contacted on of us in the Northeast section or cross posted so we could help you out
4-try coming out to the meets we hold weekly....you might get educated on what you are driving
5-where did you take the car for service because i hear nothing but nightmares from westchester and bronx dealers
6-mileage?
7-year of car?
8-new or used?

Pretty much a given. Mazda is the only one that's going to have qualified people to work on a rotary. Unless you are lucky enough to have an independent rotary mechanic around you.

possible problems

the problem on the it grinding maybe a bent gear shaft..i had the same problem description happend to a friend with a toyota..in his case it was only a 5 spd but what he did was had it in third thinking it was first reved the motor till it almost blew up and dumped the clutch..shortly after his was knocking and grinding 3rd gear only..i had my friend run into tranny problems with the 6sp tranny from the 8he put a 13b in a miata with the 6sp and broke it with in the 1st month of use..good luck...

knocking in a rotary can be a sign of bad/spun bearings, however it would happen anytime you get in the 1500-3000rpm range and not only in neutral, but most pronounced in neutral. Given what I have seen of the renesis engines I have torn down, the main bearings are not holding up well due to selection of oil recommended by mazda even when not abused, so I can certainly see a medium mileage engine dying a spun bearing death when undue stress is put on it.

That said, it will be difficult to tell if it is the engine or trans, until someone examines the engine oil for copper fragments.
