Open Source Tuning Solutions

So I have been looking around and realized that many of the cars within the RX8's class have their own tuning software (EVOSCAN, RomRaider, etc).

I was just tossing up the idea of an open source tuning solution for the RX8. Now, I don't have any experience in tuning the RX8, nor do I have any experience using the COBB, but I do have experience in application design and such.

Would it be feasible?
Would it help anyone?

Again, this is just a research topic because my idle mind is getting the best of me while I wait for my current project to get into production.

The key to this project is that it would be open source, so anyone can collaborate on it, suggest ideas, and even program if they have experience.

Edit:

Here is more along the lines of what i was thinking: http://www.romraider.com/
RR is geared towards scoobies

Niiiice.

Edit: that doesn't sound like the open source tuning I'm used to? I know a lot of guys back home were running/tuning on stock ECU's on evo's. I don't think anyone has cracked the rx8 ECU yet.

I am talking more of an open source app to interface with the AP. Think access tuner but open source...again no idea on feasibility but just throwing ideas out there

RomRaider and EcuFlash will both edit RX8 roms. I will post my XML definition once I'm happy with it, so if you happen to have an 05 US federal MT, that problem is half solved.

The missing piece is software to actually execute the reflash. You can get MMCFlash from evoscan.com, which will work with a J2534 passthru interface. The Tactrix OpenPort 2.0 and the DrewTech Mongoose are the most popular, but Chinese clones are showing up on eBay for less than $50.

There is nothing really special about the AccessTuner hardware. It is just an Atmel arm9, some flash, and a microchip CAN xceiver. The tricky part is the nitty-gritty of satisfying the securityAccess service (can sid 0x27) and exactly how to write to the ecu. I think Mazda writes a kernel into ram do this.
