"Notify" vs. Recall

I just went to my dealer yesterday to schedule a time to get my A/C looked at (with TSB in hand) and asked him about the M flash (I'm not sure if I have it). He said that Mazda had issued a "Notify" (shouldn't this be a "Notification?") to all RX-8 owners last week so they would bring in their cars for the latest update. I asked him about the "Notify" and he said that it's basically a recall, but Mazda didn't want to call it a recall since the word recall has a definite negative connotation (my words, definitely not his!). Anyway, according to the service manager, there's no need to try wheedle an M flash out of the dealership or come up with a lie for the engine flooding or anything like that since Mazda issued this "Notify" with the express purpose of upgrading EVERYBODY'S cars to the latest flash. I now have an appointment for Monday to get my A/C checked out and the M flash done if it hasn't already been done.

Anyway, has anyone seen this mysterious "Notify?" I haven't....

My dealer wrote "PCM Recall" on the work order when I took mine in.

IT IS NOT GOING TO COME TO YOU IN THE FORM OF A LETTER. it is MAZDA Special Program- MSP04. it is not a "recall" because recalls are mandated by the government for safety issues. however it does work like a recall in that it appears as work that is required to be done when you go for service and they put in your VIN. also if you have signed up at mazdausa for MYMAZDA, it will show there as well. it's been out for nearly 2 months not a week. Look in the tech section for the TSB thread for the links to a pdf version. also you can search my posts for msp04 and you will find several threads about it.

I signed up for MyMazda the day I brought the baby home. I didn't see, and still don't see, anything pertaining to notifies, MSP04s, or anything. I do see a section for Recalls, but there's nothing listed there. Am I just missing it?

Actually, mine didn't show up on the mymazda site, but I called up the service dept. They looked up my VIN and said yeah, it needs updating. The service sheet said "MSP04 campaign".

well i could be hallucinating about it being in MSP04 being on the MyMazda. i spent alot of time in the last month reading re-reading argueing with dealers and explaining it on here so my brain is a little numb about it now. but the recalls absolutely showed there. about 2 weeks before i got the letters. if the recalls didn't show there for you guys then perhaps they were done before you purchased? As far as MSP04, read the bulletin. they have to go thru the steps to verify what flash you are on- if at M close the warrenty issue. if not at M then flash it and close the warretny issue. so whether they do the flash or not they "complete" MSP04. of course either way they are supposed to put the sticker on the car but as has been reported by snap-on most dealers are out of those, have been for some time and cannot re-order because they are no longer available.

The whole a/c thing has really soured me. I have had more problems getting that damn part!! And then, if you research on this board, you will find that is not necessarily the fix all to the problem. Love the car, hate the a/c.

The whole ventilation system on that car sucks, period ! AC cycles every 5 sec., the fan is VERY noisy, the outside air comes in warm even at 50F outside, AC comes on when you put the air on the floor ( explain that one to me please) .

I LOVE my car, one big zero to the engineer who figured out the vents. !! :-)

that's to keep the wind shield from fogging. and ,ost of the vent/heat concerns you mention are because of the placement of the engine- giving us the nifty balance/handling.

Has anybody else had this problem?

Let's say you have the face vents selected, and the fan on 4. For me, this blows a large quantity of air, so much so that I can't stand it and don't usually choose these settings. Now let's say you switch it to face and floor vents. My face vents air flow drops to almost nothing, while my legs and feet, even wearing jeans, can feel the wind trying to rip my clothes off. Why such a drop in airflow from the face vents when changing to face/floor mode? If I'm using the A/C and it's hot (and it gets pretty damn hot here in Raleigh), this is so unacceptable that I will manually switch back and forth between face and floor. A couple minutes on face, a couple minutes on floor.

i do know that the AC will keep my windshield from fogging when i put it TOWARDS the windshield and every car i've owned was this way, but the 8 starts the AC when i put it ONLY at my feet, and that's ridiculous. And to tp it it won't even turn the AC light on . About the nifty handling, i love it and it's great but how about another 2 pounds of insulation on all the hoses? Would that throw the handling off? :-)
