You know what is odd though, over the years, I can think of only three S2's ever that have had engine failures and all of them were VR R3's.

The guy in the uk had a gray one i swear!!!! So since only one rotor went is it possible to know if it was a coolant seal or apex that went? Also what's the consensus on S2 reman engines? Any better than the S1s?

The dealerships aren't supposed to open the motors on their own, but maybe they can take a peek through the spark plug holes. If you're missing an apex seal, it should be pretty noticeable. If you had 0 compression on the entire rotor, I would guess shrapnel from whatever failed first took out the rest. That and how suddenly it happened would be consistent with an apex or another rotor seal, rather than water jacket.

Also, they are saying that my stock CAT needs to go in to do the engine swap and want 2 hours labour to do it. I have a BHR pipe on right now...is that legit?

That is BS but dealers can sort of make stuff up as they go. My dealer changed mine and others when they had midpipes but it really depends on the dealer, some are cool with mods, some are not.

Should I just go along with it and then complain to MNAO after? That's what I thought. The CAT should be irrelevant to changing the engine. They're saying it has to do with the PCM or some BS. I already got jipped 70$ cause they pulled the first plug out for the compression test and then said they wanted my BHR kit off. So I did it in their parking lot at 10pm haha

Well technically, they probably could get in trouble for putting a car back on the road that is not legal. I would not fight it.

I don't know for sure but you would think that they want it to make sure you have no check
light after they've finished the install.
Also does that mean you would have to take out an after market tune if you had one.

For clarification/curiosity - was it raining/were the roads wet during your spirited drive or trip to and from costco? Any standing water?

From the codes posted, the wet air filter, and the lost compression it certainly appears that ingesting some amount of water provides a plausible explanation for the engine failure.

Dry but I might have blasted it with water at the car wash...but it didn't die till like 20 minutes after that. If that's what killed it then wow...I feel even worse.

Could you elaborate on your reasoning for making that connection?

just listened to the video ... you ate an apex/side seal and it's rattling around inside the housing like mad.... likely scouring the housing beyond repair.

Grungepup blew his engine running thru a puddle that was hidden on the other side of a rail road track during a storm. I went to help him out was surprised at how little water it was. He had the Mazdaspeed intake. When the dealer tested the engine it was almost no compression. Luckily USAA covered a new engine no problem.

They had no idea. Now i'm really considering going back to my stock airbox...

Wouldn't water going up the intake have fried my MAF? Or at least given me problems leading up to the sudden engine failure? I drove for probably 20 minutes after I washed and then she died

I wonder if the AEM/MSP design has a point where water can accumulate. Kind of like what happens in the v-shaped design in the hood during when driving in rain. Water sits in the corners propped up by the airflow.

So the intake filter itself is only letting vapour or droplets through, but they find a place to accumulate and then under some conditions go into the engine all at once.
