new to the site, looking into an RX-8

what's up everybody. let me start out by getting this out of the way, i'm a mustang owner, but i love the rx8. have ever since they came out. wanted one, drove one, was going to get one until i messed up and drive the new s197 bodystyle mustang. anyway i've turned my girlfriend onto the 8 and we're getting her one after college graduation this spring. i joined to learn all i can about it from you guys. she will def be getting a 6 speed. so other than that, where do we start? thanks guys

you might be able to find a great deal on a used one as they haven't been holding their value quite that well. 6speeds are faster, and have her read up on the car, there is more maintenance on a rotary engine than on a normal piston engine.

all in all great car and i love mine.

Definitely read through the sticky threads, as stated above. And get serious about keeping your Renesis cool and well lubricated. Here are some notes I've gathered:

LC20 oil additive: http://www.lubecontrol.com/lube.htm

Pennzoil Platinum 5w20 is a good choice for the RX-8

Cooling mods: what is a good cooling mod

Hood ventilation mod: DIY: Hood Ventilation Mod

*Throttle body bypass: http://rotaryinsider.com/rx8-59.html
AC Insulation: DIY: Easy MOD for colder AC
Redline Water Wetter: use with Distilled water, or coolant/distilled... what ratio?

ECU Clear/Reset: ECU Clear/ Reset

Performance upgrades

So I've been hearing mixed opinions about problems when it comes to the 8. Is it one of those things that if you keep it well maintained you'll love it every day or is it manufacturer flaws that no matter what you do, it's gonna fail? I love the 8 and if it's just a maintanence thing, I can live with that. But if it's Mazda related, well......

Welcome!

Just kick back and poke around the forum. Within a few hours/days you will quickly discover what people love about this car, what potential issues there are, and how great of a community it is.

BTW, glad your girlfriend is getting a MT RX-8. She's a keeper (oh, and so is the girlfriend).

Cheers!

thanks to everyone for your comments. she's a mustang lover like me but that's just to much car for her so i got her turned onto the 8 a while back and now she's got the bug. my '07 GT is black but she's really into the whitewater pearl rx 8. one question i do have is i've seen FI around the forum. what is that? also what are the initial things to do to one performance wise when you get an 8? b/c i've course i'll be driving the car some as well. i was trying to find out if you can retune the 8 like i did my mustang. i've seen some things on here about a reflash but i haven't found what kind of tuner you do it with. thanks again guys for helping me get started.
