I am writing this thread in the frustration of a bad cel. I need help. I purchased some new tires this week (Toyo T1r's-255-45-18 for the front and 225-45-18 for the back) and because they couldn't reuse the tire sensor, a bad cel was thrown.

Is there anyway to turn off the sensor from looking for tire pressure? The tire pressure sensor are obviously not on the wheels therefore, the cell won't go away.

Any help would be great.

I don't think tire pressure is your problem. I think mismatched tire diameters are. Why would you mix 255/45 and 225/45 width tires on the car? And esp. bigger in the front? It must look weird (strike that, - it does look wierd), but moreso the ECU must think something strange is happening. Therefore the CEL perhaps?

BTW, CELs are not "bad". They're there to tell you you got a problem!

actually that is a typo, 255 are on the back and 225 are on the front. Thanks for the update on "bad". the cel is there to tell me a problem, which i am having.

The tire sensors that are on the back of the stock rims are still on there. Which is in my garage (not on car). the car is looking for that sensor. obviously it can't find it because its on my old rims, so it throws a cel. i want that indicator to go away. that is the advice i am looking for.

Perhaps you mean the dash light for the tire pressure? That's not a CEL, it's just an indicator, which of course you'll get in that situation. It's only a light. Many run wheels without sensors installed and the light will be on. Some cover it up with tape, others don't care. There is also a mod involving cutting a wire that will nix the light permanently.

A CEL would be another dash indicator and is usually associated with any number of other things.. there's a list of CEL codes on the site. But you need a tool to read them from the car. Hope that helps a bit.

thanks for the clarification. So i guess i have to cover it up or cut a wire to get rid of the indicator?

that stinks.

would you have that mod for cutting the wire?

thing about the cut wire "fix"...it works on some cars and not on others.

I have heard if you have the spare you can put all the sensors in that and inflate it to 35psi. That should get rid of the light.

I have the stock rims so I haven't tried it myself.

this might be a stupid question, but could it be as easy as a fuse? is there a fuse that controls that part of the car?

Just use a zip tie and some duct tape and attach them to the wheel hub on the spare equally spaced as you can...the spare will work fine.

If one came loose I'd assume it would be thrashed by the time you got to a tire shop. The others might be as well.

If that's the case I'd probably just try to live with the constant TPMS light.

too bad you got the T1-R's those are getting bad reviews because of a blubbery side wall.

Get yourself a short length of 3-4 inch (diameter) PVC pipe. Get two endcaps of the same size. Pick up a valve stem. Don't forget the PVC cement.

Drill an appropriately sized hole for the valve stem (or one of the TPS assemblies) in one of the end caps. Install valve stem or TPS sensor through the hole. glue that end cap to the PVC pipe (make sure the PVC pipe is just long enough for both end caps to fit on it with little or no space between them) Place all sensors (or the three that remain, if you used one in the end cap)into the pipe and seal up the other end with the other end cap. Pressurize the contraption and hide it somewhere on the vehicle.

I'm not sure if the TPS sensors rely on having a pressure difference between the part that goes inside the wheel and the part outside. If that IS the case, drill 4 holes and have all 4 sensors fed through the end cap.

It's not an elegant solution, but it is effective. The parts are readily available at any hardware store and should only run you $15 for materials.

I'm almost positive that the sensors need to be atached to the stem so If you are trying the tube mod you will have to make 4 holes.

i am pretty sure the sensors are activated by rotation. or the bat would go dead real fast.

I think you should try to at least "get to know your own car" before you do anything else (including the CUT tpms wire part)

You cannot even tell between CEL and TPMS. So What else do you want me to say ?

You might money for new rim and tires, but money cant buy you knowlege. Go read something first.

That makes sense.

I've heard of people taking their rims to a machine shop and getting them machined to accept the TPMS on other cars. A good shop will know how much is safe to remove and still maintain the integrity of the wheel. Has anyone on this site tried that route?

I know a lot of guys don't really care if the tire pressure is monitored, but it's a nice feature in my opinion, and I'd hate to give it up
