New engine
To say that I am a little excited would be the under statement of a lifetime. I have been experiencing warm start issues with my 8 for a little over a year now. The car has 65,000 miles on it.
I put it in the shop last August for the same issue and they replaced the plugs, wires , and coils. They also did a compression test and said the compression was a little low but with in tolerance. I believe the numbers were hovering around mid sixes. (6.5, 6.4, 6.3, etc.) The new wires, plugs, and coils seemed to temporarily correct the issue. As soon as the temperture started warming up (maybe 4 weeks ago) I started experiencing the same issues.
I took it back into Mazda and told them that a.) the car was performing horrible on hot days and b.) the car was hard to start when a brought it up to normal operating temperature, shut it off for a minute or two and attempted to restart it. For instance shutting off the car to run into a convenience store after the car was warmed up and attempting to restart it. I went into the dealership with a booklet of information I had gathered. I wanted to show the dealer right up front that I was aware of the service bulletins and the issues with the rotary engine.
The service manager and head mechanic were great. I have a k&N Typhoon after market intake and just bought a Greddy Spectrum Elite exhaust. The head mechanic said this was not an issue with getting the engine replaced if need be. He also recomended that I get a light speed fly wheel. He said and I quote "You will be side ways when exiting our driveway with a light-weight flywheel."
It was a pleasure to personnally meet someone who obviously knows our cars inside and out. He has been a mechanic with Mazda for over 20 years now. I got the phone call about an hour ago with the good news. (I'm getting a new engine) The bad news is they wont have the engine for 10-14 days and they are telling me all in all I wont have the car back for about 3 - 4 weeks. Not a problem for me because this is not my daily driver its just my toy. This has been a great start to my day!!!

this is from racing beat for engine break in
- For the first 1000 miles do not accelerate under full throttle.
- During the first 1000 miles do not exceed 4000 RPM.
- For miles 1000-2000, expand the RPM upwards - but do not accelerate at full throttle.
- Over 2000 miles, full throttle and high RPM is acceptable.

One other quick question guys. I just purchased a new Greddy Spectrum Elite SE exhaust. I should have it next week. There shouldn't be an issue with installing the new exhaust before I break in the engine should there? Its probably a stupid question but I always have lived by the motto that the stupid questions are those that were not asked.

I'm not sure how all dealers operate but Mazda Turnersville did offer me a loaner. I have a Jeep Grand Cherokee that I use for work so I didn't need a loaner. I work on a Navy base in their engineering department so I have decals and stuff on my truck to get through the gates. Getting a loaner and using that for work would just be a hassle.

Would it help if there were a BHR-certified and trained network of shops who we pre-qualified to do performance installations? BHR would still handle engine builds and Cobb AP tunes ourselves but help shops to be better-informed on what works and what does not with regard to the RX-8.
If they were to have issues/questions on things we would help them along.
We are already working on it.

Well I finally got my car back on Wednesday. What a difference. The car starts like immediately with barely any cranking. The vibration is gone thanks to the new motor mounts. I had no idea of how this car should feel being I bought it used. Obviously the motor mounts were shot when I bought the car. The dealer also put on my GReddy SE exhaust. It sounds awesome. A+++ rating to Turnersville Mazda in South Jersey. They even went ahead and detailed the car inside and out for me being that they had it so long.
