Considering the RX-8 as a whole, i can't bring myself to pay more than mid-20s for this car in full trim. Look around at various dealerships, and don't settle for anything short of what you want at a price you want to pay. Be patient.

If you get the base model, I wouldn't pay more than 23,500 after current rebates of $2K financed through Mazda.

For the GT, if you can get it for 28,000 or lower that is good.

You might want to wait until August to see if rebates go up. As a rule of thumb, go to Edmunds.com, and you can configure the car and see invoice, etc. The prices I am giving you here are just about $500 over invoice plus rebates. I wouldn't pay more than that.

Helping someone buy an AT RX-8 is like taking a blind person to a silent film. It's just not right.

I would use edmunds.com's pricing service or something similar. Use it to email several different dealers and you should get some decent offers.

Help him guys, he has to look cool for the first day of high school, sigh....

If you're parents are paying for all of it, the best thing you can do for them is get the cheapest one and don't complain about how it doesn't have all the options you want.

Don't let the AT bigots scare you off.

The dealer is basically offering you the official sticker price. Based on typical RX-8 depreciation that is way too much. You want to get at least a $2,000/$3,000 discount or hold off buying until you can get that level of discount or just buy a used RX-8.

Unfortunately used 2006 ATs are probably rare. IMHO, a 2006 AT is much preferable to a 2004/2005 AT (the 6 port engine and 6 speed AT is worth it).

Good luck!

Ignore the idiot's in this thread. I think you can pick them out.

Try to get it in Sport trim at the least. That way you get most of the good stuff. GT is only leather and some other amenities, and Touring is pretty much a sunroof. The GT's seats are significantly heavier than the cloth one's btw.

"Idiot here"
Asking an ex-AT owner (me, a current MT 8 owner) about help with your new AT purchase
is like asking an ex-smoker what kind of cigarettes to buy...

Why did I buy an AT the 1st time around...?
I was an "idiot"...

Good Luck!

So why post at all?? Just so everyone knows that you traded the AT in for the MT? Some sort of ego boost? It's a ******* car. The OP wanted help buying a vehicle, that is all. His actual question has nothing to do with the transmission in the car, regardless of the thread title.

If you cannot or will not help, don't post. It's asinine, and does absolutely nothing for anyone, even if it allows you to pat yourself on the back for being so much smarter than the rest of us.

Disclaimer: I'm sorry for being harsh, but it's the same **** over and over, it's juvenile, and it's a pet peeve of mine. It is also directed at the other jackassery in posts 4 and 5.

As you can see, the opinion of some is the AT rx8 is inferior to the 6 speed. In reality, it is a completely different car. Early At's had there problems, the 06 is much improved. If you like the RX8, and dont want to shift manually, get the 06 RX8. If you feel like you might want to learn to drive a stick, then get the 6 speed. You will enjoy either one. Also, be very thankful that you are able to get such a nice car at a young age, dont take it for granted.

Think I struck a nerve...? Root Canal anyone...?

I don't need an ego boost because
I don't care what anyone here thinks of me...

The AT 8 is a great car! I just happen to prefer the MT.

I'm just sharing my experiences with both models...

All is good

You didn't strike a nerve. You just perpetuate a persistant problem (and being a former AT owner, you should at least understand). You should re-read your first post. You weren't sharing anything about either model. You were basically implying that the OP is an idiot for considering an AT. People needing ego boosting, don't realize that they need it. They just go after anything that'll give it to them. There's no other reason to post what you did. Your first sentence in this post is in the same category, the "hey look at me" category.

I'll not respond any further in this thread, in order to not take it further off topic.

aside from the obvious fact that the AT/M debate has once again spun way out of whack...

i agree with the others. The decpriciation of the 8 is more then you imagine. I wouldn't even bother dealing with them if they are not dropping below $24K MAX for a base. 2nd, go with the GT if you can afford it...but once again, don't deal with them until they drop another $2-3K at least. Have you put any thought into finding a new 05? You'll do a double take when you find out what you can walk away with. Granted that it doesn't have the 6-port or the 6sp auto...but still.

I own a 6sp manual...and i understand that some people just don't find it feasable to own a manual. I respect that, and hope that you can find the 8 that fits you right! Good luck!

Hey OP,
Welcome to our dysfunctional family. I want to apologize for my hijacks and hi jinx.
My relationship with the 8 is a labor of love... Like any machine, it's not perfect all of the time.
No matter which 8 you choose, (either the base model or anything up to the Shinka model)
You'll be driving something unique. There are pro's and con's with both the AT and the MT.

For those of you that have misread my previous posts concerning the AT vs. MT...
They're just trouble makers! I am only sharing my experience with both versions,
I am one of the few that have owned each so, I think I have a good perspective on both versions.
It has nothing to do with an ego boost...
Both versions of OUR 8 is a wonderful car like no other...

Good Luck with your purchase. Get the most options you can afford.
