Question Is my car special or did they get it right?

I bought my 8 in Oct. It had a August build.

So far I have.....

not flooded the engine.

I get 22 mpg with 60% highway

Center console does not get hot.

oil is just below full with 1700 miles.

Air does not cycle on and off.

no CEL.

In fact, no problems at all.

So WTF?

i've got 4000 miles on mine and zero problems, but i can't boast your 22 mpg...i get about 18-20, depending on how much highway I drive. in other news I had my spoiler installed today, and they treated me to a loaner red rx-8 and a tank of gas while it was being installed =) Loaner cars are so fun.

Re: Is my car special or did they get it right?

You forgot to mention... do you get the low oil light? But yes, I'd say you got lucky.

Here's my tale:

Not flooded the engine.

I get 16.8 mpg with 60% highway

Center console gets hot.

Don't seem to burn much oil.

A/C cycles on and off.

No CEL.

No low oil light.

So who's the poor shmuck that gets ALL these problems? Someone who should have taken his car back.

What are your shift points? Do you go WOT often? Have you dynoed the car, you might even have the 250hp fuel maps. After you go for a drive (with the center console lid closed) open it up and check for heat. Are you sure about the A/C not cycling on and off? The A/C and Heat problem were reported back in April by a few of the RX-8 owners in Japan. So it isn't a US specific issue.

Dude, be happy for the man. At least for one guy everything is working right. Mazda oughta buy his car back from him for like $1,000,000 and dissect it to figure out why everything works. ;-)

I got my Winning Blue AT in August. It just turned 2k miles. I drive about 80% hiway and have been getting 22-24+mpg.

Oil is down about 1/3 quart - I started checking it at about 1k miles after reading about others having an oil problem so I don't know if it started out that low or it burned it.

Other than that, I've had none of the problems others have been talking about. When I take it in for its first service, I'll inquire about the oil pan with baffles and some of the other "fixes" that should be in the dealer's list of TSBs.

It's not a problem - the engine has oil injectors to inject oil into the combustion chambers; it's supposed to burn a little oil. That's why you're supposed to check the oil level more often, and add as required!

Gordon

No problems here. The A/C does cycle (cold/cool), but I'm assuming that's by design. 20MPG mileage. 230HP at the wheels.

OK, just kidding on that last item :D

Havn't flooded engine

No CEL's

2 Low Oil lights (but getting oil pan replaced on friday)

Has used 1 quart of oil at 2500 miles (did oil change @ about 1k miles)

AC doesn't cycle

13-15 MPG, 80% of driving i'm shifting at 8k-9k, lots of WOT, other 20% i'm stuck in traffic.

Center console doesn't get hot

But the passenger side door panel is sqeaking when i go over bumps or when i play music with a good amout of bass.

All in all i'm pretty happy.

Something is definitely wrong with your car. I'm especially concerned about your mileage. You may need to file a complaint or inquire about the buyback.

well i have 1600miles

no flooding

15mpg - only 30% highway and always in traffic- that's ok, i tend to drive aggressively (otherwise why buy the car?)

aircond ok at 38 degrees celcius

centre console heats the ENTIRE cabin once you stop the car and leave it there for a bit (even when parked undercover)

no oil pan light

no squeaks

so I consider myself pretty lucky, less so when its 38 degrees celcius and Im sweating like a pig getting back into my parked car.

I have had zero issues with my car as well... I am hoping that the fuel economy gets better, but I am only at 1,000 or so miles, so it should get better.

Let's see:

2100 miles,
Used 1qt of oil
No CEL
No Oil light
No A/C cycling
No hot center console
No squeaks
A few brrrrps around 3000 rpm (both times cold engine)
13-16mpg with around city driving
18-23mpg on highway

All in all I'm very pleased, but would like a bit more torque.

I have 1700 miles on my blue 8. Fuel consumption seems to be getting better. The tire pressure warning light came on once and the tires were slightly low (3-4 lbs). There has been some oil consumption, but that is by design. So far so good, I love the car. Yeah, just like everyone else I would love more torque especially on the low end, but I knew that this was the case when I preordered the car. The great points outweigh any negatives by far.

To all the "No engine flooding"respondants: Was this because you have avoided the situation that tends to cause it, or have any of you actually tried the cold start, switch off, restart?
I think I can learn to live with this, but the accidental stall pulling out of the garage in the morning has me a little concerned, particularly when the wife will drive, as she has not driven a lot of stick. (Of course, having said that, you all know who will actually be the one to do this........)
