more powwa, maybe?

I've looked over the threads a few times and seen REW swaps, hybridization of the renny and the REW via either using REW housings, making the counterweight/ front cover from the rx8 fit on the rx7 engine, or even blocking off the side exhaust ports. perhaps I have overlooked it, but would manufacturing or cnc machining special 2 piece side irons for the Renesis without the side exhaust port be a good option to go to? you could keep the standard intake and all the regular parts, just a custom exhaust manifold and modifications to the stock side irons. since the side irons are cast and have water channels etc. in them.....couldn't they be measured then cut in half, then be redesigned to allow for the change in internal geometry from having the side exhaust port deleted? all during the engine teardown procedure for turbo application. keep it all stock except the exhaust, then maybe have a reliable rx8 with ease of having everything work fine and not being too much money (after R&D and prototype phase) perhaps roughly the same cost as an REW swap? you guys have any thoughts or ideas?

Sounds like a great way to spend a ton of money to make something of dubious longevity.

Keep an eye on my turbo thread ............. I might be onto something .

I'd love a reliable turbo rx8, and your thread is pretty awesome! I just finished reading it all. If it all pans out really well, I know it would be cheaper and easier than my idea. But thats the thing, its just an idea. I'm not the guy that can do all the tuning or have all the know how, but the premise seems solid. Keep the basic stuff in the rx8 that works/ was designed to be in there in the first place......... Resolve known issue with turbo systems/ side exhaust ports. maybe I'm nuts, but its possible these parts could be cast from aluminium instead of using cnc. basically the side irons would all be 2 piece designs or perhaps one piece designs if cast. Once completed you just put the engine together like normal after having the rotor housings have the exhaust port cut out like a 13B-REW engine( save for extra sealant on the custom "irons" with no side exhaust ports) thus having a hybrid design that will drop in and work (theoretically) with a custom header etc. for turbo applications. I would think worst case scenario after getting a working model would be around the same reliability as a Renesis with a standard turbo configuration. although R&D would be difficult to do/cost to manufacture would be high would mean higher retail price (somewhere around racing beat aluminium side plate prices ending MSRP maybe). Again, this is all clearly speculation/ craziness on my end. If I had the cash to do this sort of thing right now, I would for the community! I am unfortunately nowhere near that well off right now. and I have to focus on doing brakes all around the family fleet first, clutch on the jeep, and then finally new battery/ boost pack for the RX8 before any go-fast parts get into the mix. Ideally I'd have defined autoworks help me with a 4 rotor.....one can dream

Yeah ... nothing wrong with the idea ......... it's been kicked around a lot on here at various times .
Mazdatrix actually built a hybrid that went pretty good by all acounts .

wasn't that the one that was a Renesis but it also had the REW rotor housings? super crazy exhaust manifold? or did I miss another bash at it? I am eventually seeking what you want form your turbo setup, reliable 400WHP. very reliable! but I want my car to run like it is stock from the inside, no gauge clusters everywhere, just clean and fun!

I was hoping for something similar to that engine that mazdatrix worked up only just have regular 13B exhaust ports, while deleting the side iron exhaust ports so everything could be managed with OEM like install. I was looking to get away with gauges by going with a goodbox and tuning via the Cobb AP. Although perhaps im overly optimistic.

The Cobb is going the way of the dinosaur. Read up on MazdaEdit or other standalone solutions for tuning solutions.
