The engine cover only serves two purposes. Aesthetics and acoustic baffling.

One function of the battery box is to collect acidic fumes and direct them away from electronic devices. Note at the bottom of the box is a little ram tube that extends down into fresh air from in front of the radiator. Also might have a small impact on lowering batt temps.

In North America.

In the rest of the world, there are tough specs for pedestrian protection, (no hood ornaments, no bull bars, soft hoods and crumple zones) and the big plastic cover forms a part of that crumple zone.
It affords pedestrians the protection from the 'hard points' on the engine block, usually performed by a steel hood, that an alloy hood can't.

Yep, because when you do take off the engine cover, despite the rotary's iconic status, when you give it a long hard look from above you do catch yourself glancing up and down the street to see if one of your neighbors has lost his lawn mower engine! Brazen and impressive it ain't!

Mine's missing the engine cover. I think it looks better with it, plus it reduces dust and dirt particles going thru the engine compartment.
