Question Manual or Automatic

I would like to hear your ideas and suggestions about trasmitions for RX-8. What is better-manual or automatic transmition? I have read that if you like sports cars and automatic trasmition then RX-8 is not for you. Why?

Really? manual all the way. More power, reliability, 9000 rpm etc...

I'm also thinking about manual transmition because I've got used to it, but there are some people who try to persuade me about the oposite. That is the reason I wanted to know about the differences.

at any rate, a manual transmission is the way to go. it gives you superior control over the vehicle. it allows you to be one withthe car. the reliability of the transmission, like anyting depends on how you treat it. it can be your best friend or your worst enemy. a sports car with an automatic is like having sex witha mute. you feel good when in the saddle but afterwards, you're yearning for more excitement. a manual transmission connects you with the car and is the transmission of choice for most enthusiests. drive one of each and make your choise based on how the car leaves you feeling.

I've always loved the automatic transmitions. They are so smooth with their giraffe like head, and feet the size of an elephant.....

I think it's more general than that. If you like sports cars and automatic transmissions, then sports cars are not for you. (Unless, as Dominion so eloquently described, you have a disability.)

Part of the sports car experience is a close relationship with the car and the road. A manual transmission enhances that relationship. An automatic turns some of that over to the car, and isolates you from some of the control. Despite the paddle shifters and the puffery that goes along with them, the AT is still a slushbox.

Part of the fun of a rotary is how high the engine revs. The auto RX-8 red lines at 7500 rpm, while the MT red lines at 9000. There's a corresponding loss of power.

Funny that you're inclined toward an MT, but you have friends who are trying to talk you into an AT. It's usually the opposite. Browse this forum and see how often AT owners are scolded. And maybe get some new friends.

Ken

i dont want to sound like a **** or anything. but if you are asking us which one is better out of the 2, i think auto is the way to go. also you will still get the great handling that all the other rx8 has. so you are not missing out that much.

6. Be respectful. This is harder to define, but will be moderated. An example would be disrespecting RX-8 owners who chose an automatic transmission over a manual, and "sneering" at them or acting like they're idiots for the choice they made. If a moderator believes you are being purposefully disrespectful to a fellow member, you will be notified. Bashing for the sake of bashing will not be tolerated.

In counterpoint to the pro-MT argument that mazdaverx7 and I both presented, don't forget:

True statement, its just no rocketship. The AT is good if you only care about looks, comfort, and handling. You WILL want more power eventually if you care about performance in the slightest bit, you need to expect that before purchasing an AT. However, there are alot of happy AT owners out there.

it's a sports car, Manual all the way.
One of the most unique and enjoyable things about this car is the 9000 rpm redline, why deprive yourself of that with an Auto?

Unless they live in a high traffic area.

Using a clutch is a bitch.

If you drive in this type of traffic you are better off with an AT

Nope, that rule was not put in place to discourage conversations such as this but rather to stop the outright BASHING and ridiculing of Auto owners.
Believe it or not, that was the case early on with this forum. IF people posted they bought an A/T, they were ripped apart by the M/T guys.

With that said, I am posting the following in jest.

Basically, it's what YOU want to drive. Nobody else is going to drive it for you...

Personally, I love manuals because I like making sure my left leg doesn't just sit there and fall asleep... (Ok, so that's not really why, but it's A reason...)

Mostly, I just like knowing if I want to "get up and go", I can downshift and hit the skinny pedal, whereas in an automatic, I hit the skinny pedal and then wait a second before it starts going...

If you're one of the "cell phone in one hand, drink/food in another, biotch slapping the crying kid in the backseat while driving with your knee" kind of person, then get an automatic. Or better yet, call a cab. Manuals are not for people that "multi-task" while driving...

If your friends all drive automatics, then get a manual. Why? It discourages them (or outright prevents them) from EVER taking your car... If you're of college age, this is very, VERY important...

auto isn't too bad, I mean if you have a family where your wife is going to be driving the car too, or if your parents bought you the car and they wanna be able to drive it too. Then you don't really have an option do ya? Besides, the paddle shifters are always a blast to play with.

I myself would vote for manual though. It just makes more sense on a sports car. Plus I feel more comfortable knowing I'm more in control of things.

Just keep in mind, auto is going to be cheaper on the rx-8. I was looking at the dealerships and they seemed to charge about $3,000.00 more for the manual trans.
