As someone with no vested interest in which side is "right" in this debate, I must say I do find one thing rather amusing, which is the degree of fervor some (most?) M/T owners bash the A/T horsepower and for being "so slow".

...here are the typical discussions it seems:

Mustang Owner: "My GT has 300 hp and just creams your rx-8"
RX-8 M/T Owner: "So what, horsepower doesn't matter. Big deal if you have an extra sixty horses, who cares about straight line performance, the Rx-8 handles so much better, has the really cool smooth unique engine, looks better, blah blah blah"

...two minutes later the same M/T owner is in this conversation:

Rx-8 A/T Owner: "I love my Rx-8, it's really fun and I like the way it looks"
Rx-8 M/T Owner: "What are you a moron? The A/T is SLOOOOW! Don't you realize you have 40 -- FORTY -- less horsepower? What kind of idiot buys a car with 40 less horsepower. How could you be such a wuss? If you had ***** and drove a stick you'd go much faster..."

...then the pontiac GTO owner walks in...

GTO Owner: "I just got a GTO and it's awesome. 400 HP and 0-60 in under 5 seconds..."
Rx-8 M/T Owner: "Big deal, horsepower doesn't mean diddly. The only people who buy cars based on horsepower are ricers. So you've got an extra hundred and, what, and seventy horses, so, um, so, well yeah, so what. My car handles better, looks better, has this neat sounding engine, blah blah blah..."
GTO Owner: "Hey I like the Rx-8 too, but I just dig my car. I cruise around in my automatic GTO and just can put any car on the road in the rear view mirror."
Rx-8 M/T Owner: "Wait you drive an automatic? You wuss, don't you know how much horsepower you're losing? Man if you got the GTO stick..."

ok, I find the whole conversation kinda funny, but I do bring up one point.

The gto runs 0-60 in 5 sec's and 1/4 in 13's
The mustangs 0-60 in 5 something and 1/4 in 13's
the rx8 manual runs 0-60 in 6 secs and 1/4 in 14's
the rx8 auto runs the 1/4 in the 18's and not sure of the 0-60.

While the gto and mustangs are faster, less then 1 sec in most catagories then a manual rx8, but running 4 secs behind in an auto is a huge amount of time.

Drive what you like and don't worry what others think. I mean, c'mon, those audi TT's, now they are really slow...

usually, when manual 8 owners tell auto 8 owners to go get a manual or whatever, is because the auto owners are looking for performance and there is a vast difference in their performance. and even on this forum when someone talks about the manual being slow, it means that the 8 isn't the car for them.

and manual and auto transmission is objective, some people like manual, some don't.

Two chickens drive up to a bar, both in new RX-8's. One is a manual, the other an auto. The manual chicken says to the other "I bought my 8 because I can carry the kids around in the back seat!" The auto chicken says "Oh, do you have a lot of chicks?" Says the manual chicken, "Yeah, a whole clutch of them!!"

The AT takes away about the only real advantage the Renesis has over many piston engines yet has all the drawbacks. The RX-8 has one of the best Manuals on the road, that's gone, the Rx-8 can rev higher than most cars on the road, that's gone as well. So you're left with a torqueless archaic slushbox that looks pretty and handles well, too bad that handling as all but ruined by the lousy AT tranny.

LOL i just posted about that last night, i find it very funny my self.
not that im knocking the manuals, i love stick shift and i drive stick shift my self. I just find it funny now some people are all about how 1/4 time is not important. when they talk about mt vs at rx8, 0-60 and 1/4 mile suddenly becomes important.

rx8 is not about acceleration... its all about handling, tiwsties blah blah blah, but every time theres a thread about accleration stats or rx8's lack there of. those threads grows really fast and stays at the top of the forum for days. seems to me most people secretly cares a whole lot about 0-60 and 1/4 mile...

neways, carry on. I personally think 6mt is much more fun than driving an auto. Both cars will still loose to a new V6 toyota camry in acceleration whether its a mt rx8 or at rx8. I say just let the AT owners enjoy their car for what it is... and mt owners enjoy their cars for what it is... and just have fun with it. no point dissing your own bretherns.

You're right. But what is the common denominator on all those threads? Check for yourself. EACH AND EVERY time the EVOIke's and STI Erics come out and highjack threads, play on stats and "facts" claiming mini-vans are faster than our 8's.

Of course most 8 owners care about acceleration, its a freak'n sports car, but from what I've seen most are more interested in the total performance package, not just stats. But stat jockeys need to play "yours is slow, mine is better", and guys here will accordingly tell them to f-off, so what? Is it a coincidence that the guys who always put down the 8's have faster cars? Of course not, but its their way for compensating for their small dicks.

How about you go back and look through my posts. You will see that most of the time, the only time I chime in is after idiots like yourself and roaddemon post derogatory comments towards cars that are faster.

And you're right, people do like the total package. Which is why I got the STi. It has speeding and handling.
