A lil question...

Hello, im still new to this forum and I have read through many if not all of the sticky threads and I just have another quick question if you all could help me out :-)

Im looking to buy an RX8 and just watching a reading these forums to get as much info as I can. I read a thread where the person said they use premium gas. Just wondering if you only use premium gas? Is it ok to use regular unleaded? Im a college student who commutes to school so I dont know if thats the only kind I would use(?).

Sorry if this has been brought up before, theres just so many threads and I just want to get this clarrified up, thanks!
And I hope this doesnt start a big debate!

There are people that run 87-93. I would pay the extra 1-3 dollars per tank, but that's me.

Well...It's enough to tell that you HAVEN'T read through "many if not all the sticky threads"...lol...Yes...Only premium...There is always going to be a debate as to whether it's a big deal or not, but why take the chance...If this is just a way for you to find a cheap way out, then the 8 is NOT for you...That is all.

Yes, it's recommended. It's only a few dollars more per tank, so not that big of a deal imo.

Don't drain yourself dry on the payments and insurance of this car, you'll probably get in the neighborhood of 17-19mpg, depending on the condition of the car, and how much highway you're doing. Factor that in with the cost of premium gas, roughly 12 gallons a fill up if you run it empty.

I get in the neighborhood of 200mi every tank. I end up having to fill up every 4-5 days, so that's roughly $50ish every 4-5 days.

I absolutely love the car, and it doesn't bother me one bit, but if it's something that'll bother you, then well, maybe you should hold off on the sports car for now. But if you're in love with the Rx8, and you can afford every aspect of it(Including maintenance), and still be able to live your life, then get one.

And, read a little more on the forums. But don't believe what just anyone says, they could be wrong, such as anyone NOT putting premium in their Rx8....

You might consider seeing what your owner's manual says. Mine says to use 91, but that as low as 87 can be used with some loss of performance. I don't know which year it changed, but newer manuals say 91 but as low as 87 can be used in an emergency.

I believe there's a requirement (or maybe a tradition) that cars in the US be able to run on 87. I wonder what Mazda learned that caused them to change the spin on when you could use it.

I always use premium. Why mess around with the knock sensor retarding the timing, just to save a dollar or two on a tank?

All cars sold in the US have been required to be able to use 87 since the early 70's.

"to be able to use" is pretty vague I guess so maybe that is true.
