It's so hard to say goodbye!
It's been 6 years or some odd years in the making, but I finally gots me a new car. Sadly, it isn't an 8 - Fortunately I didn't trade the 8 in, it's had a special place in my heart for awhile, and was a great car despite it's many pitfalls it had due to being an 04 A4!
Probably won't be driving it too much anymore, just doing some minor work on it to get it nice and purdy to be sold off prviately rather than pull my pants down, bend over, and grab my ankles at the stealership.
New car is a 2012 GTI, and I must say, it is one helluvah car. No disrespect to any RX-8's anywhere and or the people that love/enjoy them, but I honestly can say I won't be looking back. I'll think about it, but I won't. It's just as much fun of a drive as the 8 (IMO) and it feels good again to have some torque at low rpm's
I'm very very glad I fell upon this forum when I got my car as its been such a great thing to have, a great community and a tooooooooon of info.
Anyway, what a long strange trip it's been rx8club.com, I know I've been lurking for the past few years and not posting, but it's time for me to be on my way, thanks for all the help and information through-out the years, its been invaluable.
Thanks!

4 DOORS FOR MORE WHORES
Poke fun. This is the internet and nothing bad will happen to you.
OP - I'm curious as to why you got an automatic to begin with.
Was any of your ankles broken while shopping for a car? I'm not making fun of you but that's the ONLY reason I bought an automatic Accord.

Maybe I can convince the wife into just letting me keep the 8. It's not like I'll get THAT much out of it...'04 with 43k-ish miles, lots of hail damage (I rented a house for awhile with some friends and we didn't have a garage/covered parking...NEVER AGAIN.) And a discolored fog light, thankfully I didn't hand over my arm to the dealer to have fixed yet. Figured I could do a DIY fix, but after reading the thread.......no thx I'd break something
@allothercommentsabouthavinganA4
No my ankles weren't broken, I wasn't high, or drunk, or impaired in anyway. It was the one with the best price/mileage on it. Got it in 06 with 18k miles, all the others were 05's or other 04's with 40-50k+ miles. I still wanted something of the bumper to bumper left, so I went with that. Looking back on that I should have just bucked up and gotten an M6, but oh wells. Whats done is done
Sidenote: The VW I went to had an 8 on its lot, I can't remember the year or mileage but I remember it being very low mileage, and it was M6. The idea of just getting that nagged me for a long time while I waited on getting my finances together, by the time I got back to the dealer and was ready to purchase (more than likely the gti anyway, it was a coin flip really, but more so in the GTI's favor) it was gone. Which I'm not surprised at all, they're fantastic vehicles and that one for the mileage, after you haggle them down a bit, would have been a steal.

Well I went the other way (VW to rx8). It was an 02 Jetta 1.8T. APR chipped, carbonio cai, h&r cup kit suspension with front and rear braces and larger diameter sway bars, with 17" wheels and some other stuff which got it up to around 235HP and 240TQ.
It was the best car I ever owned (drove like a go cart, it was fun, but still in no way shape or form would hug a curve like the 8 even after the suspension mods) until I got my 8, which is an 04 MT6 and has been perfect (no issues at all since purchase except had cap replacement). Every once in awhile I did look back (like you I kept the car until it finally died a few months ago) and I think you will too. Two totally different beasts with different strengths and weaknesses.
The aftermarket for the car (the VW) is incredible and there are serious gains to be had well within reasonable budget, just find a local APR shop, they can really hook you up. I used New German Performance Racing in Aberdeen, MD.
Congrats on the new car.

Have fun. GTI is a great car. My brother has a MkV.
The rear suspension tuning is quite brilliant on that car and that FSI motor has a nice 'voice'.
Agility, response, and unity is not in the same class as RX-8 though.
This is obvious when you switch back to RX-8 after driving around in the GTI for a while.
Whenever I drive the RX-8 after shooting around in my Speed6, I'm reminded of the RX-8's brilliance with driver unity.

I never really pushed my RX-8 all that much, and I haven't had a chance to put the GTI through its paces, I'm not expecting it take the twisties aswell, but it should be just as fun and fairly inline with where the rx-8 is. It wasn't built for the straights

GTi and RX-8R3
Good luck with the GTi. DO not look at any GOlf R's however - you will then need to trade up! I have a 2010 R3, wife wanted a 2011 GTi, bought her one, then the R came out - we now drive a 2012 R (and sometimes the R3).
All three are fabulous cars for the money - enjoy!
