For many reasons the IGN-1A's are the bees knees for the rotary. They're fantastic on our turbo track miata's as well but on a rotary is where these coils shine. It will take some time but eventually you all will see the light These coils are proven on FD's running tons of boost, e85, water injection, 600+hp... down to stock naturally aspirated FC's. They work for rotaries, and very well... I've yet to see a better coil for the rotary, and if there was one the only thing it would be able to do is make more power... however I've yet to see anyone max out these coils.
Supposedly (and this is a very loose estimate and on piston engines) they're capable of igniting 250+hp PER COIL.

I'm thinking about it still.
I've not done much work on my Renesis, and admit I'm not real familiar with all the iterations of ignition setups.
The wiring harness' length has me wondering, do you provide detailed installation instructions, or is the layout of it obviously apparent when laid out?

Ok I really should have done some more research.
By all accounts it looks like the OE dwell map will work well enough with these coils.

Why would you think that?
The dwell requirements of these coils is much closer to stock coils than Yukon or other LS variants. The big issue is the power feed...and that has been addressed with the way they are wired

I guess perhaps my statement was a bit harsh and biased towards being boosted.
That said I will stick by it and add this.
If you're NA ... I cannot see why you would spend the money to get these. I would honestly just say buy the "C" OEM coils. I just can't see why you wouldn't stay stock.
Sure they may work fine on a NA setup but there is nothing that says they are better than OEM as far a performance or even life.
Also at this point can we honestly say that there use on the Renny has been vetted using the OEM dwell table?
I think anyone buying these coils without the correct dwell map is taking a chance and being a bit of a test pig for the rest of us.
If that's your thing than great and you'll have the bragging rights with this massive coil setup. They look awesome.
And finally I guess it would just bug me that there is untapped potential in the coils that I couldn't have because there is no dwell map.

I didn't read the thread from the beginning, but it appears the rant is directed at the GM coils, not the Mercury.
Forgive my ignorance, but I still don't fully understand the dwell map issue.
I understand you can use the ECU to set it, but without a 'map' there's no way to do it?
Is that something that has to be determined by the supplier?
I saw Team posted some figures, are they not useful?
Can it not be manipulated while on the dyno to achieve the best result you're looking for?
Or is it more of a matter of knowing what the dwell should be already?
I'm just trying to better understand, not fully comprehending the tuning aspect of things.

I think the largest positive with these coils is the output is much better at the stock dwell settings than the D585 coils. The dwell is more suited to stock dwell...and need less adjustment to function ideally. The overkill issue is another story. Personally they are a waste on an NA system. ..and I still stand by the latest stock coils as good for an NA car

I decided to invest in the SB kit, although I am still NA.
I haven't installed it yet.
Just curious if there's been any feedback since it's been a few months, and I don't recall anyone posting any impressions of it.

I'm running a greddy kit with BNR upgrade. So far the coils have seen 25psi.(hooked my boost controller up wrong... WAY WRONG!) They have handled my daily driven boosted duties with no problem... I'm a happy camper. I have roughly 1,300miles on them so far.
I had BHR coils before. I still have them. They are in a box in storage...before that I had stock coils...

I finally installed mine.
It's definitely a tight fit.
The only issue I had was having to back out the compressor bolts for the slotted holes to get the one engine bolt hole to line up.
Other than that, it's a very nice kit.
I admit it may be overkill on my NA 8, but it gave me an excuse to do some wrenching.

I'm overhauling and upgrading the Greddy turbo installation on the car I got at the end of the last year. One of the items on my list is to fit the IGN-1a coils that are now surplus from my 13B REW conversion as the car has just standard RX8 coils; I know that the car had an upgraded ignition kit 4 years ago but an owner has changed that, whether because of failure or just to recoup a few extra pennies on selling the car.
I can't find a DIY build description so will do a write-up with images when I do the work, probably by the end of the month (Feb 17). In broad terms, I'll make a dedicated mount and power loom, use the existing coil connectors for triggering the coils and make new ignition leads. The only thing I need to sort is whether my Adaptronic Select ECU set up's trigger signal will work an IGN-1a directly or whether I need to get some form of intermediary convertor, for example if earth triggering is used by one and voltage triggering is used by the other; quickly looking at the Sake Bomb kit (thanks for saving me some thought, guys), I think I won't need a convertor and am not expecting any difficulties.
If anyone has a wiring diagram or definitive answer on the triggering then please post here as that would, at the very least, give me confidence in what I design/produce.
Update: I've opened up one of the coil boxes and read the instructions. The coils have 2 trigger pins, one for a 0-5V signal and one for a Ref Ground signal, so I won't need a convertor. I will, though, have to spend a little time finding out which trigger I've got.

You will have no issues.....You can play with the dwell a bit as well
Just run larger power and ground wires to a dedicated power circuit and the triggers will work perfectly. You can use the stock power wire as a trigger for a relay and it makes that simple. Unless you really see wanting to go back to stock coils in the future I would just rewire the triggers to a 4 port plug and get rid of the rest of the stock wiring. Or leave it and run standalone trigger wires from the Adaptronic ( my preference)

I had a bit of time spare so wrote a longish summary of my thoughts only to then find this that didn't come up in my search here. Although it's not Adaptronic-specific, it pretty well answers all my questions.
Using a 4-pin plug for the trigger wires is a good idea, and the Adaptronic pin-out guide suggests the trigger wires at the coils go direct to the Adaptronic. I'll use a 5-pin as I'll include a trigger earth. A plug would also allow me to have a neat wire extension if I positioned the coils away from their current location to reduce heat build-up.
