I suspect the real numbers people have been posting might be a bit higher in real life

Bought my 40th AE June of 2011. Paid $19,000, including a Mazda Pre-Owned Certified extended warranty. The car had around 13,000 miles at the moment.

Based on countless hours of research, that was actually a 'good deal' in the NE at the time.

These numbers all seem fine to me. There is also a big difference between your 2008 with 13k miles and a 2004 with 50k miles.

I personally think you overpaid by about a grand last year. But I also think I got a really good price on mine, and others might not see it that way.

Sure, I'll play.

I bought a 2009 R3 in October 2011 as a first car for my son's 16th birthday. It was sold new in March 2010 with 19k miles so when I bought it it still had factory bumper to bumper for 17 months (March 2013) and 17k miles.

Bought: October 2011 (Sold new March 2010)
Car: 2009 Victory Red Mica RX8 R3
Miles: 19,000
OTD Price: $21,500.00

Car's been great. Needed a new Cat (under warranty thank God) at 23,000 miles. The kid loves it more than life itself, details it every weekend. lol

LMAO You and me both. Ours came with all the original paperwork in the glove box. If I recall the sticker price was right around $33,500! After 19 months and 19k miles, I got it for $21.5k. 1/3 depreciation for a practically brand new car? hell yeah I'll take that any day!

It has generally been my policy to buy used, But I have been getting pretty good deals as far as financing and incentives, that a new car is a reasonable option in some cases. There a couple of situations where you could take a bath with it, such as you drive a boat load of miles in a short time and then try to sell or trade. I know I would keep the car for a while, so it was no biggie. I just bough my truck last November, and there was $5000.00 in incentives plus 0% too hard to walk away from. My motor in my 04 F150 took a crap after 258 thousand miles. The truck was in immaculate condition other than cylinders 2 and 5 decided they did not want to play anymore. I did not want to put $5000 plus into it, and used trucks were pushing 18k. Made sense to just buy new. To my trucks credit it broke 30 miles from home, and still made it, albeit a bit shaky. Still drove around for estimates. Best series trucks I've ever owned.

Since I don't drive the 8 all that often, it still has some value. If I drive the car to a dealership they all want to buy it or want me to trade. They have given me reasonable offers, but I'm not yet ready to part with it.

Dam you are one awesome father! I'm looking at the prices for the 09/11 R3's and they aren't as nearly as low compared to you and Jim! You guys are seriously lucky!
Any secrets to negotiating?
I'm looking at least $22,000 around 20k-27k miles without taxes and fees , one or two of them are certified which I'm leaning towards.

My advice would be to look around privately, I was in the market for an 8 for over 3 months before I got my R3. It was originally listed at 19k but I managed to work it down to 16k because I knew there was very low demand for RX8s in my area. I looked at over 10 different cars and could tell that none of them were selling so the sellers were getting desperate. I actually planned on getting like an 06 but decided to take the R3 for a test drive to see what it's all about, then I just walked away and kept looking around. It was actually the owner that contacted me and offered to lower the price to 17.5 because she knew I was practically the only person looking for an 8 in the city. after that I managed to get it down to 16k no taxes! Anyway don't settle on a car, wait for the perfect one. I almost bought a grey one but backed out last second because I didn't love the color and i'm glad I did. Oh and make sure to get a compression test Good luck

I've tried but autotrader/cars.com/craigslist are not showing any local private sellers. (There's a local dealer that have just received a 2011 R3 with 1.5k miles! but its up for $29kway out of my budget) I've made a chart of possible R3's throughout the U.S. as I'm okay with open transport. All of them are from dealers and been sitting in the lot for a few months. Planning to contact each of them and negotiate some deal hopefully. Found a 09 black and 10 blue R3 that I really like, and miles are pretty low. Am considering those. Well that's after some more research and carfax check ups.

Man good luck to you bro, yeah from what everyone says that compression test is a must before getting an 8. Even if it means you have to travel for that perfect 8 it's worth the trip. I travelled 300 miles to get mine just FYI. I've only seen like 2 R3's in Austin. That car is amazing and really stands out I've yet to see a blue one though. CarFax is great and a must, paying for the carfax bites the budget book a bit but it's worth it so you won't be surprised if the previous owners did some ooppies, but autotrader is awesome for those haggle deals for private owners. I wish I would've did that instead of a dealership, there so hard to bump down on the price.

Negavite. I did not overpay at all for that specific model. The book price at the time for a 40th AE in the northeast with that milleage was $22,500 (dealer), and $19,000- $20,000 (private).

The Mazda Pre-Owned Certify Warranty was $1,650 at the time. The dealer gave me the option to decline it, which would have brought the price down even more. But I decided to get it anyway. So if you do the math, it was a decent deal for purchasing that specific RX8 model in NYC. I could not find a private sell for a 40th AE with such low miles and extended warranty anywhere.

My earlier comment was referring to the fact that the 40AE was priced significantly higher at the time than other RX-8s in the area. I could have gotten a Sport of the same year and similar milleage for less money. But I wanted the 40th AE, so decided to pay what I did at the time.

All that matters is that you think you got a good deal. Other people are allowed different opinions.....

But back to the comment about everyone's posted price.....I think it matters greatly WHEN the purchased happened. I didn't purchase mine until May 2011, but was watching prices since 2009 (on used 2004-2005). Prices on used RX-8's changed when Mazda announced that they would cover the engine core for 100k miles and 8 years. I actually saw prices start to rise after that announcement.
