How long did your Rotary last?

Considering over 10+ years have passed by since the first RX-8s rolled off the lot and I am curious to see what the average is, I've decided to hold a poll to see what others have gotten out of their engine. Be sure to post your year RX-8 with mileage!

To those on even a 3rd engine, take the aveage of what you had on the 1st and 2nd motor, people who are still on their 1st shouldn't vote but are encouraged to leave their mileage in the comments!

These polls get difficult because a lot of people are on their 2nd or 3rd engines each with different failure points. Also, some of us are still on our first

Perhaps "still on original" engine should be a box by itself, so we can compare.

Crap I won't be able to edit the poll unless an admin does it for me

@sonicdaman: hmm, I would say don't vote but hell that sucks! Glad to see you got yourself another rex though!

How long did any of those prior polls last? Anyone participate in a second or third poll?

This will be my 8's Fourth .

1st owner didn't put oil in the engine... obviously it died.

I purchased the car, everything checked out. Turns out when they replaced the engine they did not replace the failing CAT. Cooked engine #2

#3 at this point was running well for about 15-20K miles, coolant seal gone.

So that brings us to current day where i will be dropping another motor in.

Does that help?

Also, incase it was missed, Go up two posts from Mine.

I remember when RIWWP had his bad *** survey going around, . I wish it could have gone to every owner. I have participated in at least five polls on this subject easily. But based on the numbers from the mazda reman plant article I think it is safe to say that conservatively, at least 20% of RX-8's have had and engine replacement.

I only got up to 62 submissions i think. Still far too few to do anything but shrug at. I'd probably need 500+ in order to actually start getting an idea for some of the trends/data points, 1,000 would be better, 2,000+ ideal.

As a mod do your superpowers include mass emails to active users? I'm sure a great many wouldn't mind filling out a survey.

Nope. Maybe an admin could do it.

But I doubt I would leverage that.

It's at the point that we know all of the different reasons for failure, no more surprises there. And we know how to address each of those failure points. So the only real reason for a survey now is to see if we can get an answer to the largely irrelevant question of: "If you do everything right, how long will it take before the engine wears out". MAYBE if done properly, we could estimate the lifespan penalty for stuff like ignition failure or not decarbing, etc...

Also, the data gets FAR more unreliable the longer time goes on as fewer and fewer members are original owners, or even have had the car for the majority of it's lifespan. The only way it could be done 'properly' is with people entering their VIN so we know if a car is getting data from more than 1 source, and even that would be a small fraction of the total of active users, and inactive ones probably wouldn't bother with the time to go find a VIN code for a car they no longer own.

Original owner of 2005 with 142,600 miles. Original engine. Have replaced the following items: coolant reservoir, radiator (only because I broke the nipple to the reservoir), HVAC control, windshield and replaced the ignition coils with BHR's kit plus the usual maintenance items (fluids, spark plugs, filters, brakes).

Damn, 20% is quite a lot. So...what is the total number of RX8s sold in the U.S.?

Do you have the data survey under a graph or % statistics rather than under a spreadsheet?

...both.

In order to graph data, you have to have the data in some sort of structure first. I know what I'm doing with data, I've made a career out of it. Telling credentials on the internet is always moderately pointless though, so feel free to challenge me if you feel the need to.

My 8 is currently in the shop getting a brand new engine. I had 130,000 miles on the engine.
