how hi tech is the key?
Today, i was told by the service tech that the mazda keys have a chip in them that emits a code and that it has to be programmed and it matches each of our cars individually. thus, you cannot get a copy made at a key shop, and that its a security feature to deter theft. Is this true? Its a neat security feature, but living near the beach, I surf before work, and i tuck the key inside my wetsuit, but leave the transmitter locked in the trunk. Am i damaging the key if it gets wet??

I can't say for sure, but I think you should be fine. I doubt there are any active electronics in the key, probably just an inductive loop like the security card you see used for building entrances. You can get those things wet all day long.
Some keys are active; with batteries and such. BMW for instance has the key fob functions (lock, unlock, trunk) built right into the base of the key itself. Those would definitly fry if dunked in salt water.

Water will not damage the key.
The PATS system in the car is not exactly state of the art but it may qualify you for a insurance discount.
Make sure you have three keys at delivery and NEVER get down to one..
