grinding

i have what i consider to be a problem, although it doesnt seem to be affecting the cars performance during daily driving. although to someone who knows better, it may lead to bigger issues (?). its just annoying.

when accelerating from a standstill, be it in 1st gear or reverse, there is sometimes a 'grinding' sound while im under about 10 MPH. for example, in the morning as i am backing out of my parking spot, i hear the grind. then, in first gear it grinds a bit also. it doesnt seem to happen all the time, but ive become very consious about it.

i wish i could describe it better...it almost feels like im not giving it enough RPM's, the car kind of 'shudders' and shakes, like it might stall, but that is not the case. only when i accelerate from a standstill.

anyway, im not experienced enough to diagnose problems based on sound or feel, nor am i too familiar with the nuances of the rotary yet.

regardless, i plan to take it in to the dealer for examination, but i would appreciate any offerings of help or explanations from anyone who knows better than i do.

in fact, the noise seems to have started after i had my car at the dealer to install the new starter kit and for my 30k service...

the noise doesnt seem to be coming from the front of car ie under the hood, but more like around the wheels.

Does it do this every time you accelerate from a standstill, or just once after the car has been parked like overnight? If it happens once when you first start off it is probably the ABS system doing a check. That's normal. If it happens repeatedly when accelerating, it's a problem that the dealer should be able to diagnose.

it seems to happen more often when i am driving for the first time that day. but it sometimes happens several times. reverse from parking spot *grind*...put it in 1st gear *grind*. after driving and coming to a stop, when i accelerate again it usually doesnt happen.

its a fairly gentle grind, but it wasnt there before.

thanks for the suggestion G048. either way i suppose i'll just hafto take it in to feel assured the problem isnt serious or to catch it before it becomes serious.

I suspect it's the ABS thing you're hearing. First time I heard it backing out of my garage I thought the front lip was rubbing on the concrete.

I know it's a stupid question, but are you sure it's not the synchros whirring? It freaked me out the first time I really noticed it since it's way louder than it has been in any of my other cars. They'll make that noise mostly when you decelerate without clutching in and it can sound like something's wrong. I'm not the best shadetree mechanic, so take my suggestion for what it's worth

I hear the ABS thing on mine. It freaks me out sometimes because my car is low, not sure if it is the ABS or the bumper. Are you sure it sounds like its grinding though?
