the fuel level is determined by a float in the gas tank. its not magic. if you are parked on a slight grade, the tank could read more or less than it has in it depending on the angle. you know you are running low, why not just not worry about it and put gas in...just my two cents.

huh? you mean you were able to actually drive around after the light comes on. with our gas mileage that would be like 2 miles right? just get gas already. your fuel pump will thank you.

Heh, last friday, I made it 46 miles from when my fuel light turned on till i got to a gas station.
The fuel light turns on 2-3 gallons remaining. Even if you are in the horrible gas range of 15mpg, that is still 30+ miles before you actually run out.
Granted, play it safe, but still, no need to panic. Less fuel = less weight = better mpg anyway

well the thing is our fuel tanks are shaped like saddle bags. one side pumps to the other where the level sender is.
often when you shut the car off it will read lower than when you start the car again later. that's because some fuel is shifted when starting.
so what happened was it got low enough in the one side to light the low fuel indicator lamp. but after you turned it off and turned it back on some fuel shifted raising the level around the fuel level sender enough to turn the light off.
everyone else is right- when the light comes on you have 2.5- 3 gallons of fuel left. that leaves you at least 30 miles of driving if you keep it in a high gear at low rpms.
