Alright I live in Missouri where we have to have a license plate on the front. It would look so much better without it so i was just wandering if anyone else lives in a state where this is required and doesnt have it.. ive thought about just keeping it in my car and if i get pulled over ill just say that im waiting for the mounting bracket to come in...

Well, since you posted it already.

I have been driving without a front plate for almost a year now with no issues. Nevada requires you to use a front plate if there is an OEM mounting bracket but I have never been hassled.

I think its that the car just doesn't look like it has a spot for the front plate to go at all, or even a bracket.

I also live in MO, I do not have my front plate and have never been harassed about it. That is not saying I will not though. All it takes is one gung ho rookie.

In Ohio, I am required to have a front plate. Haven't had one on the RX8 in 9 months of ownership without any issues. However, my DD is a Honda Pilot and I have received a ticket for failure to display my front tag on that. What sucks is that ticket was from a meter maid while parked downtown. Over the years, I've been pulled over a few times (in various cars) and never hassled over my lack of a front plate.

In Utah we're supposed to have them on the front as well, but I don't have one on mine. I leave it under the passenger side mat just in case, but I've never been hassled about it. (Knock on wood). I got a fix it ticket on my trans am a few years back for not having one, however.

1st ticket about the plate - went to court and got the fine reduced.
2nd ticket about the plate - right in front of my house...after a heated argument with the officer, he said he'd come back everyday until it was on...f$#!$@^#^#%#^$%$@@#
so then the 8 got a custom plate bracket mounted to the undertray.

I have had my RX-8 in Colorado for a few months without any problems. I think most tickets get written by the meter maids. I would expect only the few Barney Fifes out there to hassle you about it. I see many cars here in CO that don't have front plates even though it is the law. They tried to change the law not too long ago, but apparently some law enforcement cried about it so it didn't happen.

Sunshine state, Florida doesnt nid front plate if i'm not wrong...

I live in Nebraska, and boy oh boy..... I got pull over thrice and once by a trooper on the interstate... and one of them told me, "waiting for your mounting bracket to come doesn't gives u the right to drive ur car without one. If it's not on, means u break the law, so, you can either a) not drive it or b) wait till it's installed b4 driving it".... harsh words.... not only tat, I got pulled over twice on the same day...

hey guys also, im goin to college next year.. i assume it would be alright to not have a front tag there right? the police in a college town arent going to give me a ticket because of my home states law are they?

I've been driving in Texas for the last 7 years, and I've been pulled over once for no front license plate.

I was prepared and had my spare license plate underneath the front passengers seat, and so I just showed it to the officer and told him that I would be getting it installed (but still didn't lol ).

But then again, I probably got pulled over because I was driving a suspicious looking black car which was modified and had a massive rear spoiler.....It was an Evo.

California's pretty strict even if your vehicle is registered out of state. I've been pulled over twice for "Not Displaying A Front Plate". One, due to a collision. The second time, for having it on the dash. Both cost me $40, $25 for the fine and $15 for inspection.

The Sheriff's office requires CA vehicles to have a front plate mounted at the front (bumper). Having it sit on the dash will still get you issued with a fine. I have seen incidences that even 'meter-maids' give out tickets to parked vehicles not having front mounted license plates.

I questioned the LAPD when I was pulled over and he stated: "one of the reason is due to the ever-popular camera stop light installations". The camera needs a clear picture of the "front and rear plates of the car, and a clear shot of the driver" for the city to issue a traffic violation on an intersection. But here's where I relocated mine to hide the "eye sore", notice the crack on my front spoiler (collision accident) near the fog light?

I'm sure they get that excuse all the time. Probably will not work.

The front license plate is not bad at all. Better to just not obsess about that, nor orange lights, nor shortening the short shifter.

I'm thinking of driving down to California for the first time. I have a front licence plate on my 8, so I'm not concerned personally. But what if your car is registered in a state (or province) where front plates are not required by law and not available even if you want one?

I haven't read the California DMV Driver's Handbook in more than 10 years, but I remember a passage regarding out-of-state residents considered as "visitors" in California for 30 days and could drive their out-of-state vehicle; I guess if you're only here for a short lenght of stay, the CHP or the local PD wouldn't hammer you down if your State of Residence, as you say; "not require(d) by law and not available" to have front plates, "even if you want one."

Plates are specific by state, therefore, the po from one state cannot write someone from another state for not having the other state's front plate .... this is from friends of mine who are cops in the NYC area and a detective from a local prosecutor's office. I have a PA plate and drive in NJ all the time, and I have not gotten ANYTHING.... (PA requires 1 plate, NJ requires 2)

Same goes for tints, I know

FURTHERMORE, you cannot get nabbed for emissions/inspection out of state as well.... so feel free to shoot as much fire as you want if you are out of state
^attempt this last one at your own risk tho ... if you shoot fire in a cops face, you might be asking for it

Regarding emissions, when I used to browse Zilvia.net, a few members who reside in California have had their Nissan 240SX's registered out-of-state (i.e. Florida, Nevada, or Arizona) to have the SR20DET or RB20/RB26DETT in the S13/S14 chasis.

I am not sure about the inspection in those states .... is florida no inspection?

So does this mean even if you are disobeying your states law, the other state cant write a ticket? or just that if you are obeying your law the other state cant write a ticket for you disobeying theirs? I dont know if that wording makes sense haha

I can't vouch for that... If there's a stop sign, I stop; if the speed limit is posted 65 mph, I'm at 65-70 mph. It really sucks if you get pulled over out-of-state and have to contest your fine or citation. I had a friend who had to show up in court in Louisiana because of a rolling stop that caused an accident.

I would say, obey the traffic laws. As far as what a PO could cite you for a fix-it-ticket, you may get away with it if you're a "visitor".

That applies to laws that change from state to state ... inspection laws, tint laws, front plate laws ... a cop from one state is not qualified to know the specifics of those laws in the other 49 states ...

Those are non-moving violations that apply to you depending on what state and what even what county you are registerred in ....

However, moving, noise, parking, etc violations apply to the state you are currently in. Think of it this way, if it requires an action from you, you can get nabbed for it in the current state


Example: a friend of mine with his car registered in NJ got pulled over for speeding in PA. The cop (A PA cop, who is no doubt familiar with NJ regulations and assumed my friend had front plates based on his car being an NJ car) said, "I lasered your front plate and you were going 87 mph"
My friend: "I don't have a front plate."
Cop: "I suggest you go to court, then."

My friend went to court and got out of the ticket due to this technicality.

Knowing how my friend acts around authority figures, I firmly believe that he was being a dick and that if the cop could have, he WOULD have wrote him for not having a front plate.

Speeding, parking violation, moving violation, etc = action, out of state can write tix
Front Plate, inspection, etc = not an action, out of state cannot write tix


HOWEVER, if it is close enough to the border, an out-of-state cop can keep you detained and radio and call for a cop from the bordering jurisdiction to cite you.... Nonetheless, this is unlikely as thats a pretty dick move (to the cop getting called) to call someone for a front-plate, inspection, tints, etc ...

This also applies to district cops. As a cop from one town cannot write you for speeding outside his jurisdiction, but he can detain you and radio one of the cops from that town...

State troopers have jurisdiction everywhere (I think , but I am not sure...)


I am not sure what happens if you are driving with your light out ... I would imagine you can get cited out of state for that as it is a safety concern
