First tank mileage: just under 18
I just filled up my new RX-8 for the first time yesterday (after topping off the "free" tank from the dealer). My mileage was 17.86 mpg, all city.
I'm pleased with that, considering the low mileage other people have experienced. I anticipate that it will get even better as the engine gets broken in.
Disclaimers: I purposely drove very conservatively on this tank to maximize my mileage (and to baby the new engine). My commute to the office is about 11.5 miles, all surface streets except for about 2 miles of freeway. However, the surface streets allow me to get up to speeds of 45-50 for decent stretches between stoplights.
Once I get past the break-in period, I plan to drive "normally" for a tank -- a little more aggressively, not worrying so much about keeping the rpms down -- to see what difference it makes.

And you felt you had to start a new thread to add to the millions of mileage threads because of why....?
Please tell us the next time you take a crap too, we're anxious to hear about it.

I'm also a new owner. I bought my car last monday and I got 16 mpg from a full tank of gas. I drove conservatively keeping the rpm less than 3.5k. My daily commute is 13 miles highway, 70% of which is stop and go traffic.

Curly - That's about what I got on my first several tanks of gas, too.
Now, I'm averaging about 275 miles on 13.25 gallons of gas - which is when I refill. So, I'm now averaging about 20.75 mpg.
By the way, CONGRATS ON THE NEW 8!! Welcome, dude.

Welcome to the club man. I got 17mpg on my first few tanks, mileage is inching up a bit as I've noticed my last tank was about 18. Driving is about 60/40 of highway/city.

The funny thing is, I read the HEADER on his post and knew it was about gas mileage.
Shame KHTM is such a dolt he was needlessly tricked into reading it and having to respond.
I was anxious to read the result as I am getting a new 2006 in a matter of weeks and was curious about what those few with new cars are getting for mileage.
So thanks, Curley!

they'll get the same mileage as every other car on this board. I mean really what's the point of posting that car "X" is getting 18.2 mpg vs. car "Y" that is getting 17.9 mpg.
What possibly could be learned from all this repetitive posting..
"Hey, I heard that these cars flood and that they burn a lot of oil."

Curly,
You're from Grapevine, eh? I am from Southlake (going to school in NY right now) - never see any 8s around whenever I'm there. Good to know that there will be at least one cruising down 114.

Aaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh!!!!!
I would kill to get near that number. 11.5mpg all city! Brought it to the dealer he ran a standard computer check and stamped it normal. Told me there was nothing he could do. This really is putting a damper on my liking this car.

I get 25 mpg all highway w/ cruise (road trips). I avg about 19-21 mixed. My worst all city driving was 12, but that was when mine was new. I got about 14.5K miles on it and the mileage has gotten better. Also summer mixes of gas usually yield better mileage, but if you've seen the prices at the pump, you know we still get raped.

2004 Rx-8
Hey all, I just got my RX-8 6 speed Friday night. I am a BMW trader. yes, you heard right. I love this car, but as all of you, i hate the gas mileage. I took a trip from bellevue WA to Gig harbor and back in a night, (Saturday party). I had the cruse control set for the majority of the drive. once i got in town i let the car loose on the back road. oh, so did it like..... When i got home i was at 85 miles on the tank, and burned a little less then 1/4, not too bad.. But since then, I have burnt another 1/4 tank driving in the city and hitting nothing but hills and lights. I have 115miles on this tank. half full now. so yeah, that's what..... 17.69mpg. not too bad. I have had three BMW's before this car, and my 95 325is automatic got 18-20 mpg driving softer in the same scenario. My 01 330i manual got 22-33 mpg. I don't think its too bad, but i should stay off the pedal a bit. lol

i've gone on my 2nd week without refilling the gas tank. my secret? don't drive during the week. hahaha. I'm at 189 miles and a little over a 1/4 tank of gas left. Warmer weather nets a little better mileage.
I'm going to montreal (800 miles round trip) later this month. Hoping I can reach the 300+ mile club with all highway driving.

I dont even get that after a day of spirited driving in the mountains.

Great post Curley. Glad to hear your car is getting good mileage. Welcome to the club and don't let some of the a holes on here discourage you from posting in the future.
